I presume you are going in as an OR, not able to do the Baker course at RMC?
Not an OR, just regular infantry. Hoping to move around if I get in and do roles which I couldn't do in the Australian (Armoured Inf, AA Inf, MBT Crewman, Cav). I don't know how it will all go, but hopefully come back to Australia and get a trade within the Australian Army, I'm mainly looking at the UK Army for travel and operational experience.

Go on-line and contact the UK Army Careers Information Office, - Theyll put you in a better position to decide.....
      Really?
I would have thought recruitment would be either up or they've tighten it due to the UK Recession

        Ok clarification..
        OR = regular infantry soldier.

Now if you want Armoured Inf = mech Inf, AA Inf, MBT Crewman, you end up in Drawin. Though AAInf may just be a posting in one of the Battalions.

Not exactly an exciting life style selection. Though you could do a stint in the battalions and then try for SAS or 4 RAR for a bit more excitement. THough I think you can go straight to 4 RAR with out the main Inf Bn approach, (mind slipping here).

Now Cav well again Darwin or QLD or WA from memory may have missed one somewhere. Not that exciting as only a small number going on deployment.

Now mentioned RMC as that might be a option for off the street as it is high cooked course. This use to be at Portsea back in my time.
Not sure if that is a move you ever thought of.. This opens up a lot more "move" options as well.

        OK just a small outline..

Going by various comments from friends of mine still serving, they are still pushed to keep recruitment levels up........I should re phrase that to say I don't think the knock-on (relief) effect has reached the guys on the ground yet. (not the ones I am in contact with anyway)

If you go Infantry you could be lucky to do all four roles, if you stay in long enough:

            Armoured Infantry (Warrior).
            Mechanised Infantry (Bulldog).
Light Infantry (Foot, specialise in Jungle and Artic Warfare).
            Air Assualt Infantry (Helicopter).

You would be hard pressed to do the 4 mentioned above as well as MBT Crewman, training you in all the trades for MBT Crewman will take you a while, and if successful, you will be starting all over again, and will have to work your way up, starting with either a Driver or gunner, then move to Gunner or Driver, then to loader (this takes a while to get their, as you are not just the loader you are the Radio Operator too, plus you do the cooking, brew making, sandwich making, keeping the turret clean plus a host of other things), and if you are really good up to Commander, but the course for an MBT Commander is approximately 6 months in duration. To be come a Commander should take in the region of 9 years service, earlier if you are any good:))

As an aside, Cavalry in the British Army is totally different than the US Army, you can have a Cavalry Regiment with Challenger 2 and a Tank Regiment with Recce vehicles. Tanks replaced the Horse, and the Cav still don't like it. :))

Oh if you get to join a Tank Regiment you get to wear 'BLACK', now that is a Chick puller. :))

So you want to be shot at?

Believe me, the Aussies will give you plenty of chances at that.

Why not just go to the French Foreign Legion? Always plenty of hot places to go to and shot/get shot at with them. (I work with quite a few ex-Legion guys)

What no Smilie for rolling around in mass hysterics..

If you want to be shot at that no doubt can easily be arranged. It will depend on what Bn you try to slide into.
You can still get the 'shot at' feeling joining up with say 1CER and with them get the mech feeling as well. Nothing like being put in a M113. But any of the Combat Eng Regts will get you into the firing line as well, be it light or mech.

                      Decisions, decisions!

                            nah mate different language
id spent the first year itself trying to spell my name in french.
when i did french at school i absolutely hated it. joining the legion and speaking french is akin to putting a devout north Korean communist on Wall street
