...on both the M-9 and my M-4 (which was brand-new out of the box, and it's MINE).
We used the Comp-M red dot sight on our carbines, and it was a pleasure to shoot.
The guys running the range were excellent (both Rangers and Staff Sergeants; one of 'em was SOCOM's new Soldier of the Year, which he won just last month). Usually, the Army can manage to suck the fun out of any given activity, even if it would ordinarily be LOTS of fun: shooting, parachuting, playing sports. But these guys had it going on. Without being unsafe or allowing the class to degenerate into anarchy, they got us through the courses of fire and the cleaning and everybody had a great time. Perfect day out there, too.
I was invited to come back out anytime I wanted to fire. I was the only senior NCO in attendance today (eight officers - one of 'em was the finest woman in the Air Force, except for my beloved Lt. Bluesman - one specialist and ME). I think they liked that I knew what I was doing, but didn't try to 'help' with their class.
I know there is a debate raging elsewhere in the WAB about the pairing of the 5.56mm with the M-4, and whether it's a happy marriage. But my carbine points well, and I shot as well as I ever have today. I am confident that I could use it effectively if I had to, and I think even if it isn't the best man-killer in the world, I'll carry it and be happy, because usually 'good enough' really is.
