  • Qualified 'Expert' today...

...on both the M-9 and my M-4 (which was brand-new out of the box, and it's MINE).

We used the Comp-M red dot sight on our carbines, and it was a pleasure to shoot.

The guys running the range were excellent (both Rangers and Staff Sergeants; one of 'em was SOCOM's new Soldier of the Year, which he won just last month). Usually, the Army can manage to suck the fun out of any given activity, even if it would ordinarily be LOTS of fun: shooting, parachuting, playing sports. But these guys had it going on. Without being unsafe or allowing the class to degenerate into anarchy, they got us through the courses of fire and the cleaning and everybody had a great time. Perfect day out there, too.

I was invited to come back out anytime I wanted to fire. I was the only senior NCO in attendance today (eight officers - one of 'em was the finest woman in the Air Force, except for my beloved Lt. Bluesman - one specialist and ME). I think they liked that I knew what I was doing, but didn't try to 'help' with their class.

I know there is a debate raging elsewhere in the WAB about the pairing of the 5.56mm with the M-4, and whether it's a happy marriage. But my carbine points well, and I shot as well as I ever have today. I am confident that I could use it effectively if I had to, and I think even if it isn't the best man-killer in the world, I'll carry it and be happy, because usually 'good enough' really is.

You deserve a reward for an acomplishment such as this.

        M-4 is an excellent weapon.

Congratz Sar'ent. That's quite an accomplishment for not only a wing wiper, but an intel weenie to boot. ;)

Okay, I'm going to let that one go. ;)

            Wait...no, I ain't.

Ahem...awright, soldier...You're about as messed up as a football bat. Where did the Army find a left-handed metric insta-disaster like you, anyway? I bet you made yourself out of left-over soldier-parts, but threw in some spares from a transvestite because you thought they 'looked purty'. If I were to ask everybody in the company that loved their country to step forward, how far behind the formation would YOU be? (and one and one and on...)

I kid, of course. But I actually heard this little sermon delivered by a former Army drill sergeant (a FEMALE, and a scary one, too! ) to a youngster that just wouldn't do right. There was LOTS more, and some of it was VERY humorous, but it was going past at such a high rate of speed that this is all I remember. :)

Seriously, thanks, Sniper. I was out there early (I got to ride out to the range with the fabulous Captain J...rowr! ), and while we were all waiting to start, I was thinking of you running YOUR range, way back in the day. I think I shot so well because I wanted to brag a bit about it to somebody that would appreciate it.

Even if ya is just a mud-bug.

I'm doing well with the shot-group, but I can tell that I'm sighting a bit to the right with the right-hand targets. I start shooting the ones on the left first (just like reading the pages of a book), and work to the right. Each time I go to the next target over, the shots seem to drift a bit more right in each target.

Sniper, what do you think? Should I consciously compensate for it (I'm afraid I'll over-correct, and instead of still hitting black but missing the ring, I'll miss to the left, and NOT hit black)? Or is it bad technique that I can control with body position/breathing/etc.?

How 'bout this: I'll shoot from the RIGHT first next month, and go LEFT. If I'm pulling 'em to the left, I'll know it's body position. If they're still going slightly right, then it must be my EYE, and somehow I will have to compensate.

Proud of it too bro. ;)

                Seriously though, congratz.

PS: If you're right handed and your left to right strings are pulling to the right, it would seem to be one of two things:

                1) you're jerking the trigger a bit
                2) you're not settling the weapon on target before engaging.

Let the weapons sights come to a full rest on target before shifting to the next target in the string, and just as you take up the trigger slack on each target, keep thinking 'good trigger control'. When faced with multiple targets the natural reaction is to engage as fast as you can, but this is counter-productive. You want to engage each target in a quick, but deliberate manner.

Also, when shifting to the next target, first lock onto it with your eyes, then let the weapon come into line with your target. It's a bit faster than the 'turret method'.

EXCELLENT, I understood every bit of what you're saying. I'll try it.

Oh, forgot to mention, I'm a leftie. Anything more with that bit o' data?

If you're shots are pulling right on left-right strings and you're left handed, it's probably not a flinch/jerk(cause you'd be jerking the shots to the left), but you are probably firing before the weapon has come to a full rest on your left-right strings.

That gets back to letting the weapon come fully to rest before firing in multiple target engagements.

Oh, and also, make sure you're not breathing during the firing cycle.

                      Bluesman,
It could also mean that you are holding the forearm grip a bit too tight with your right hand (hence the rounds are hitting to the right. Loosen it up. The forearm is only for support, use only your left hand at the pistol grip, too apply pressure of the butt on your shouler for the rear 'grip'/stability.
                      - Ensure that not too much pressure is applied when you hold the butt to shoulder.

Hell's Bells boy - get on the horn and dial up some A-10s and get rid of all those pesky targets at once!

Bluesman, is training on a small arm and we are just giving him tips to improve his firing skills. An A-10 is not his personal defence weapon. ;)

No doubt. The A-10 has that cult following.
