no other news agency has reported this. But as that report says, the sub was following the ships to get info about it so that it can be identified later. Common practice of all navies. Just the sound of the propellers is good enough to identify ships.

Can anyone give the details of the Ships and the submarine supposedly in conflict....

The IN appears to be silent even if there is a hue and cry over it in the newspapers

The Chinese ships will probably the 2 destroyers that the chinese sended to patrol against piracy.
The ships are Nr. 171 "Haikou", a Type 052C Luyang II class destroyer, and Nr 169 "Wuhan", a Type 052B Luyang class destroyer
here are 2 sites with the summary of those ships

                http://www.sinodefence.com/navy/surf...2c_luyang2.asp

as for the indian submarine, i have no idea which submarine it could be.

IMO They should have stood off at a farther distance or close to a land mass and recorded their signatures as they slipped on by without incident. You cant blame the Chinese for the incident after all they are in internationsal waters on a piracy mission like many others and a shadowing submerged sub will instantly merit interest especially to any surface combatant. Not saying the Indians did anything wrong but being to close provoked the Chinese to act accordingly to provocation. Next time hang back a bit more and snuff out the curry a bit sooner.:))

*Bad idea to shadow two surface warships in international waters and jam their sonar as well. Your asking for provocation and raising the risk factor.;)

"It is a routine procedure. We do keep track of warships transiting near Indian waters through all means possible. However, the reports of the Indian submarine having surfaced are incorrect," a senior Navy Officer said.

Unless the sub was being shot at or required breathing will they come to the top, and why would a sub be so aggressive? doesnt that go against what the submariners are trained to do. (unless it was a question of testing the limits )

As far as following and collecting information, is that not what a submarine is supposed to do?

More then likely collecting info for their IDFF (Identify Friend or Foe) systems. Yes,it is what they do but if the story is correct and they jammed the suface ships sonar and that would alert both ships to general quarters and further measures to protect their own ships and sailors.
