It wouldn't effect their doctrine too much, just increasing the rate of fire, and would possibly be a balancing force for the revolvers of the Confederate cavalry.

This may not be germane to the discussion, but I think the Naval side of the wars the two generals fought in were vastly different. New Orleans was no Trafalgar, nor was it the Nile. I think without Nelson, Wellington would not be the figure history remembers him. There isn't a corresponding 'game-maker' for Lee to work with on the Confederate naval side. The whole dynamic of the two wars that brought the two generals to historical attention don't seem to be analogous. That you take the loser from one side and pit him against the winner from another side also seems a bit difficult to reconcile. The French had horribly overextended themselves into Russia, and with the help of the British navy, supply lines were cut and the man Wellington essentially had his victory served up to him on a silver platter. (I'm a bit foggy on my Napoleanic War history, apologies) Lee had no Nelson, perhaps if you made your set-piece battle a little more interesting with a naval battle and a 'gift' admiral from outside Lee's time in American history?
