Watched some footage over from ABC News. The San Diego affiliate talked to a person that flies the planes in his job that was outside and saw everything (not in uniform, just normal clothes so off-duty). He saw the plane approaching Miramar as if everything was normal. He heard nothing wrong with the plane as far as sound. Then the pilot and the empty 2nd seat (he said it was a 2-seat trainer) ejected. He went to the crash site first and he saw that the fire engines had already gotten there. He had a good idea where the pilot landed and he went there next and he was stuck in a tree. He helped him down and the Miramar medics took him away.

As far as location, if anyone's ever driven in San Diego, from the helicopter it looked like one of the big highways were down in the valley and the plane crashed on top of one of those housing areas that's on a hill on one side of those highways. Based on the helicopter shots, the mountains were off in the distance so it seems like he wasn't that far away from the ocean although the helicopter never looked that direction or circled around, so I can't give you a guess distance.

Well, give that one back to the taxpayer.

Unfortunately, 3 killed on the ground. The pilot was trying to make a one-engine emergency approach to MCAS Miramar and was about 1/2 mile from the base (a little further to the field.)

It's all over on the TV newscasts out here. As far as the wave-off is concerned, it may be true. One of the newscasters, however, reported that he TOOK off from an Aircraft Carrier.

Very bad joke. At last count there are 3 dead on the ground.

USS Abe Lincoln is/was conducting flight ops offshore. One eyewitness account reports that the pilot stayed with the bird until almost the last moment, in a probable effort to guide the plan into a nearby canyon.

on a serious note..the pilot should have tried to aim the plane into the sea rather than a risky emergency landing maneouvre near a populated area

.......Seems the lad was trying his best despite some pretty harsh circumstances...........

As the plane crossed over land at Torrey Pines en route to Miramar, more problems struck, including possible "flame out" of a second engine. The plane lost altitude and began to wobble.

Marine officials said the pilot was part of a training squadron and that he was trying to aim the plane at a deserted canyon [see google map] to avoid slamming into homes or Interstate 805.

I am sure the last thing he wanted was to land this aircraft in a populated area. The pilot would have tried his best to stabilise his aircraft until the last few seconds before ejecting. If the "out to sea" option was open to him he would have taken it. The expert will tell us what happened in time.
