Must say that much of it is not surprising and has just proven the thinking of a lot of us that US though in a much much better position of stave off this genocide...did nothing.

these documents prove only one thing there is no state that can claim to be a permanent guarantor of human rights; not even the united states, as in this case quite often domestic politics force nations to take a myopic and one sided view of the world even if the truth is staring them in the face.

USA ignoring genocide, USA supplying Pakistan with weapons through several channels, USA encouraging China to intervene militarily in the situation, applying diplomatic pressure on india etc. etc.

All of this was already known in India and much has been written on it, nothing new here. conformation may be...

:)) people care about human rights as long as its their human rights that are being violated.

Its all about convenience. If India had sucked up to the US back then, it would have been in the good books of the US.
Nothing has changed since either. It continues to support dictators who violate human rights while it preaches democracy elsewhere. Its all about interest. Nothing to crib about.

India's Plan B of attacking diego garcia in the event of a direct US intervention in the war.... The way indira gandhi handled that situation was just pure courage... even read somewhere about pilots being on a stand-by to carry out the attacks when the US 7th fleet sailed into the bay of bengal..

                Gentlemen,
Priorities decide which pot is kept on the boil and which one is sidelined.
Back then in 1971, 2 myopic politicians had only one thing on their radar, "how to engage the PRC and thus alienate the Soviets in Asia". Pakistan was helping them do that and India was seen on the Soviet radar. Nothing personal, realpolitik, however you could question the long term expolits.

INS Vikrant, the sole Carrier at the IN's disposal was sailing in the Bay of Bengal and was put on high alert. Completely irrational moves on the Nixon regime's part.
