Chavez says Venezuela will develop nuclear power

CARACAS - President Hugo Chavez said on Sunday Venezuela will develop a nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes, in another challenge to Washington just days after Russia offered nuclear assistance to the socialist Latin American leader.

"In Venezuela we are interested in development of nuclear energy, of course for peaceful purposes, for medical purposes, for purposes of electricity generation," Chavez said at a political rally.

"Brazil has various nuclear reactors, so does Argentina. We will have ours."

Chavez noted that Venezuela, which is a member of the oil-producing cartel OPEC, developed a nuclear reactor decades ago but abandoned it under pressure from the United States.

He said Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had offered help with a reactor, adding that "we already have a commission working on this issue."

Chavez did not offer details or say when a reactor could be ready, but the news could further strain relations with Washington, which views Chavez as autocratic and erratic.

He has repeatedly challenged Washington, notably by defending Iran's nuclear activities despite strong condemnation by the United States and Europe.

This month Chavez expelled the U.S. ambassador to Venezuela and repeated his frequent threats to halt oil sales that make up around 10 percent of U.S. oil imports.

Venezuela has boosted cooperation with Moscow since Russia came under strong U.S. condemnation for fighting a war against Georgia last month, strengthening ties between two of the United States' strongest critics.

Russia and Venezuela have also signed 12 arms contracts worth a total of $4.4 billion in the last two years, according to a Kremlin source.

Get the UN inspectors in there and get a missile shield thrown up in Mexico and there is no problem.

I really don’t have a problem with counties developing nuclear power... but why is it always the crazies who decide to do it?

cause they are crazy enough to go for nuclear power while sitting on huge supplies of oil and gas, simple.

I wish my nation had that much oil and gas around.

nuclear energy for power should be enouraged among all countries..and processing weapons-grade uranium/plutonium is a completely diffferent level of technology and no-way can Venezuela pull that off under the nose of USA..

wonder why the journos hype up everything they get their hands on

For rogue regimes, it wouldnt take too long to think of weapons. Iran also claims its reactors are for energy and not weapons.

                  Oil and gas will vanish.

                  Nuclear energy won't.

However, it should be under supervision!

But viable long-term use of nuclear energy demands use of a closed fuel cycle, with reprocessing and breeding.

That's why the NPT is obsolete as an approach to world nuclear security--the most useful long-term energy technologies are also proliferation technologies.

They're talking about building a light-water reactor in the future, with a current deal on co-operation on nuclear technologies, ie. medical isotopes, basic research reactor, etc..

Light water reactor is no problem for proliferation, & is not likely to come for some time anyway...
Russia is booked up on Reactor building for atleast 5 years, & the Venezuelan's don't really have a plan for it as yet.

Next 5 years or so they'll study about basic technologies, & check out how & where to integrate a reactor into the electricity grid.

9 to 12 years down the track if things go ahead, it'll probably come online
                        - not a big deal.

Which is what NPT is for. When countries don't conveniantly ignore it and sell nuclear tech to non-signatories
