China surely has a much larger number of planes with air-dominance/strike capability. Those old planes can still help to project power.

There are also ballistic missiles, MLRS, navy ships.

If you are talking about the ability to send troops onto the Island, China also has an edge over a single carrier group.

China doesn't have enough power projection capability to take Taiwan doesn't mean its power projection capabilit is weaker than a single carrier group.
No, The number is much greater your talking approximately 4-5 different airwings pending their deployment and what their mission actually is.
The only problem with your thought of an edge is that there is 11 groups out there which means reinforcement will be very quick not ship wise but airwing wise and that multiplies the threat the CVBG poses.

Actually, he said China is less able to project power to Taiwan than the a single US carrier group.

                  Ask the good Col.
There was a frightening scenario wherein the Indonesian Navy and its dreaded Fishing Boats were mulling over attacking Australia.
Mongolian commanders aboard those fishing boats were planning to take over the entire northern Australia. They even at one point of time had the plans to nuke Australia, the US and possibly India, if anyone intervened.

Come on, UK and France can at least attain the power projection of an American battle group...UK in 2003 and 1990-1991 and operation Daguet for France clearly proved that.

Count the number of bombs and infantry available to a British and French carrier group and then compare to a USN CVBG.

Yes, but I meant the combined power projection of these two countries is superior to one single US CVBG.

yes and that more than just raw military power potential.

How many fighter/strike jets does a single carrier group have? 48?

A single carrier group committed to combat, or the threat of it comes with the absolute assurance that if the carrier goes to war, the US goes to war. For a country like China, who is an official nuclear power this comes with the implicit threat of escalation to and past the nuclear threshold. To a export based economy like China, it means war with the US means the loss of the ability or potentially such a loss to export anything by sea. To an oil poor country like China a single US carrier group in the Straits of Malacca can starve all of China of energy.

China doesn't have enough power projection capability to take Taiwan doesn't mean its power projection capability is weaker than a single carrier group.
You are confusing military power with power projection. While the ability to put boots on the ground or plane sin the air is part of the equation, it is only part and a small part at that. The real meat of power projection is what comes behind it if it is challenged.

I am of course aware of the economic consequences of a war with the US. This is why I think war is unlikely and China will lose that war.

However, what can a single carrier group do? You talked about putting boots on the ground and air strike capability. I don't think a single carrier group can do much either. A single carrier group only has 48-60 fighters/strikers.......

How many soldiers and tanks does a carrier group have?

The best both countries could do is a Falkland type of operations. The USN did a study of that campaign. The Argentinian AF would not be allowed to get off the ground.
