An interesting viewpoint that I heard recently on this is that the Lost Cause narrative helped to bridge the divide to an extent. While slavery had clearly been abolished, this narrative and the absolute minimalization of slavery by the narrative as a cause led to a viewpoint that both sides fought for an equally moral cause and removed some of the emotion wrapped up into any discussion of the war that might have otherwise existed. It provided a means to talk about a common experience, at the expense of the freed slaves.
"So little pains do the vulgar take in the investigation of truth, accepting readily the first story that comes to hand." Thucydides 1.20.3
