  • Iran threatens to launch shebab at Israeli Dimona reactor

Iran claims that if Israel attacks Iran's nuclear facilities, Iran would respond by bombing Israels Dimona reactor. If that would happen, it would spread dangerous amounts of nuclear fallout throughout all of Israel as well as parts of Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. Is this really true? Do you think that Ahmidinjad was serious about the statement? If so, what should Israel do? Should Israel dismantle the reactor and keep their current stash of nukes before the reactor becomes the countries achillies heal? Should'nt the fact that Palestinian casualties along with arab nations like Syria, Jordan and Lebenon deter Ahmidinejad from comitting this "painful response"? What should Israel do?

Iran would respond by attempting to bomb Dimona. Note the bold font. It's not as easy as it sounds.

Dismantle their reactor? Is there enough of a proven threat?

Do you really think A-jad cares about any of the Arabs in the least, especially the Palestinians? Don't mix the excuses people use for their genuine concerns.

So If Iran would be willing to bomb Dimona even if it would harm ahmedinajads own allies with him, what should Israel do to prevent this from happening without appeasing Iran and letting ahmedinajad get a nuclear weapons program? Irans Shebab cruise missiles are capable of a reaching a distance as far away as northern cyprus! Also explain to me how Iran attacking the Dimona reactor with cruise missles is not as easy as it looks.

Every time I look at the title of this thread, I want it to say "Iran threatens to launch shish kebab at Israeli Dimona reactor."
I enjoy being wrong too much to change my mind.

Old article and a bit misleading. Dimona is not ungaurded even vs BM threats. However assuming iran got some missiles through the defenses there are now a bunch of questions that have to be asked.

1- Is the CEP small enough to land on target the center of the facility is 31 00 09.56N the actual dome isn't that big.

2- does the warhead have enough force to punch the dome and reactor? Saddam tried to do it in 91 with a concrete warhead but his Scuds didn't have the accuracy so it was no more than a hoped for golden BB shot.

3- Can one missile do it, or do you need multiple missiles?

            etc etc....

if Israel goes after a hot Iranian site, I expect Iran will try to return the favor. However if Israel goes after a hot site and unleashes radiation on Iran I would be far more worried about gas/germ warheads in population centers.

Isarael's ABM Shield might not be 100% secured, but imo, it can takecare of a couple of missiles. If at all Israel decides to unleash a premptive strike, it will definitely make sure to plumette most of the lauch facilities of Iran. If not ALL atleast MOST of them, bringing the assault capacity to minimum and then leave the rest to the ABM Shield.

At a 600 missile salvo, I think the Israeli system would be overwhelmed.

Could you link me please, I'd like to read more about their capacity to launch such a salvo.

I think it would be difficult for them to launch that many missiles at one time. And even if they could launch a 600 missile salvo, why would they use what is probably their entire arsenal to hit the Israeli plant?

Iran's missiles are road mobile and is claimed satellite linked for guidance. So if they are sat guided any flat piece of earth can be used not just pre-surveyed terrain.

It does not have to be a single salvo, just a sustained effort. Who has more misisles- Israel or Iran. No one knows how many Sahab's Iran actually has. The Iranian's of course want as many as possible and they are building them as fast as they can. But the overall Iranian defense budget is tiny so there is only so much money to go around. So I ran could have anywhere from 50-600 systems and probalby 50-200 launchers.

600 missiles (assuming 100% got through) might flatten 300 city blocks. Israel is small but not that small. 1 golden BB warhead on Dimona might make a measurable % of Israel wasteland: bang for the buck- launching everything at Dimona is not a bad idea.

If Iran does destroy Dimona, and it really becomes a disaster, would Israel respond with tactical nuclear weapons?

Considering the above, if an Iranian missile salvo was imminent or ongoing, would the US feel compelled/justified to strike?

Thus, Israel has ways of calling Iran's bluff, or it could use the situation to bring the US into the war, which is what it really wants. However, any such scenario could end in a nuclear holocaust.

There is a perfectly good reason Iran would use all 600 of its missiles at the Israeli plant. The answer is simple, to destroy Israel and cover it in radioactive waste.

Would be a moot point, if Israel goes after a hot Iranian site or uses nukes as bunker busters now wouldn't it. And nukes on Popeyes fired from inside the PG or nuclear armed Jerichos are the only things Israel has that would work to take out all the Iranian sites.

If the US doesn't do it no one else can short of nukes.

This assumes that Israel intends to take out all Iranian sites, that Israel is limited to a single strike instead of many, that Israel has a similar degree of ignorance regarding the location and layout of Iranian nuclear sites as us, that we know the capabilities of Israel's weapons systems, etc etc.

Would be a moot point, if Israel goes after a hot Iranian site or uses nukes as bunker busters now wouldn't it.
Even then, it would not be moot. While Natanz is rather far away from major population centers, the center of Tehran is not.

Finally, the Israelis are not stupid. Why would they keep the Dimona facility active, if it was so vulnerable?
