  • Russia plays spoilsport in T-90S tank deal

    :: Bharat-Rakshak.com - Indian Military News Headlines ::

As if the huge cost escalations and time overruns in several defence projects was not enough, Russia is now putting some roadblocks in India's plan to indigenously manufacture 1,000 T-90S main-battle tanks.

Russia is refusing transfer of technology (ToT) in a couple of critical areas - like the metallurgy for gun barrels, ordnance and armour plates - for the manufacture of T-90S tanks at the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi.

India, on its part, has taken up the matter with the Russian government.

"The Russians say the ToT in the two areas is restricted by their laws. While we are asking them to give it, we are also developing our own metallurgy for gun barrels and armour plates," said Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) chairman Sudipta Gosh on Friday.

Wrangling over the delay in ToT apart, OFB seems quite confident of soon achieving the planned production target of 100 T-90S tanks per year.

"This year, we will hand over five indigenously produced T-90S tanks to the Army, followed by 50 next year and probably 100 the year after that," said Ghosh.

It's not as if Russia has not minted money on the huge T-90S contracts. Having already imported 310 T-90S tanks for over Rs 3,625 crore under a February 2001 contract, India signed another big contract for importing another 347 tanks with Russia in November last year for around Rs 4,900 crore.

These 657 tanks are in addition to the plan for licensed manufacture of the 1,000 tanks at Avadi under ToT. Overall, the Army wants around 3,800 potent tanks for the requisite 'speed and shock effect' on the western front with Pakistan.

The 1,657 T-90S 'Bhisma' tanks - 310 of them have already been inducted in the Army's 2 (Ambala) and 21 (Bhopal) 'strike' corps - will constitute the core of the self-contained and highly-mobile 'battle groups' for blitzkrieg thrusts across the border.

The rest of the armoured strength will be made up by upgraded T-72 M1 'Ajeya' tanks, the main backbone of India's armoured might, apart of course from 124 indigenous 'Arjun' tanks. The 1,657 T-90S tanks will gradually replace the older T-55 and T-72 tanks being phased out.

With both conventional armour-plating and 'explosive reactive armour', the T-90S tanks can fire a wide array of missiles and laser-guided weapons. The tank in themselves are quite potent but that cannot detract from the fact that there is now a distinct 'chill' in the defence relationship with Russia.

Its time we cancel all contracts with Russia. Their defense industry was given a life line by India when it was nearly finished and now its creating hurdles in every project

I am not surprised. We have dumped Russia as an arms supplier and instead gone behind the USA begging them to provide us with the latest arms.We have increased out defence purchases with the USA and have contracted to buy 10 virus ridden Hercules transport aircraft. Does Russia not make good transport aircraft ? Naturally they are angry. We cannnot have it both ways. Moreover if USA becomes a major defence partner with India , it will threaten Russia's own security. Its only natural they don't want to give everything away to India , which has become an unreliable partner.

How loyal.... or maybe like Harish said, you can't have it both ways, you can't be a big buyer from both the US and Russia? And how likely was this ToT, regardless of the purchases of the US equipment?

Any single empire at that time (Marathas, Sikhs and even Hyderabad of the Nizam) was much "bigger" than Britain.

That has two parts of about 7 videos each, I believe. I've seen it a long time back. Check out the corresponding debate in Delhi too (although only represented by Sherry Rehman and Imran Khan on Pakistan's side, and Aamir Khan, Shekhar Gupta etc on India's side).

Damn. It's like that, huh? I remember just a few years back when Indians loved the Russians. So much for strategic partnership for all those years, eh?

What about Divide and rule policy dont you understand. Are you trying to compare modern Secular Democratic Republic of India on the same lines as Maratha Empire, Seriously. We are one of the most powerful nations in the world today, we werent before. And yes, we will not be knowtowing to any nation, Why because India is not run by a single person or the politburu. We have something called Democracy.

Love China too much dont you.

India was a country back then. A nation or state is what it was not. So you're more correct when you say 'we were not a single political entity' that we are today rather than using that big brush we have to paint the wall with a color we choose. :)

What part of the Indian history don't you understand? Look at Vijayatha Empire, Gupta Empire, Asoka Empire. Hell even during the Roman times, there was one Empire, the Asoka Empire that was mightier than the Roman Empire. Of course it didn't last too long after the Asoka emperor died but during its heyday, no one would dare mess with the Asoka empire.
