Seems like a waste of manpower to have 8 full time machinists on stand by.
Pal, I will ask the man that runs the shops. He should be able to tell me as far as their ratings go.

The Heat Treat shop and Motor winding shop would add additional men as well as the Carpenters shop and Sail Loft (Canvas,Cloth etc.)
I believe it was around 1974 that they took the SF (shipfitter rate) and changed it to HT (Hull Tech, turd chasers). For years the Navy also had ME (Metalsmiths), but when they did away with that rate, the ME's became SF's.

Myself with the help of a few other gentlemen (from our ship) assisted Rusty with the USS Iowa's machine shop (And other things outside the machine shop that came from two other Iowas). I cannot give you an update on Iowa's status as far as machine shop goes, that ones going to have to come from Rusty but hopefully all is well and they are coming along at this point.

A shot of the Iowa and I thought the shop looked great.
