RI, China to conduct joint military training

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia and China have agreed to work together on military training and military vehicle production, a move in line with the two countries' 2007 agreement on defense cooperations.

After welcoming Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan on Wednesday, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono told reporters both countries would conduct joint military training and exercises for their defense forces.

"We will also create a strategic partnership in joint financing and defense industry, which will concentrate on producing military vehicles, aircraft and vessel carriers," said Juwono, who visited Beijing last November to sign the Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defense cooperations.

He said the finance and national development ministers of both countries would discuss the amount of investment needed for the defense industry, in which state-owned aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia and state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL would beinvolved.

Minister Cao is scheduled to leave the country on Sunday after a five-day visit. (lln)

REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA - China, Indonesia start joint military productions

Indonesia and China have embarked on a joint production of various war machines in a bid to help the Southeast Asian country replace its aging warfare equipment and ease dependency on imports.

Indonesian Ambassador to China Maj. Gen. (ret) Sudrajat said Monday the long-term cooperation would cover production of military vehicles, tanks and missiles.

"What we have now is a project to produce missiles," Sudrajat told reporters.

"In this project, the Chinese defense industry will cooperate with BPPT to produce missile launchers and they will work together with PT Pindad to produce the missile's ammunition,"

Sudrajat was speaking after reporting to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on the progress of Indonesia-China relations at the presidential office.

BPPT is the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology and Pindad is the Army's arms maker.

The joint production followed last year's signing of a defense cooperation agreement between the two countries on military training and arms production.

Indonesian Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono held talks with Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan last month in Jakarta to discuss details of the agreement.

Sudradjat said under the joint production agreement, military equipment ordered from China would be produced at plants belonging to Pindad in Bandung or state shipbuilder PT PAL in Surabaya.

"In their procurement process, the Indonesian Army, Navy and Air Force have struck a deal with Chinese authorities to make some parts of the equipment in Indonesia and by Indonesian companies," Sudrajat said.

The president ordered the Indonesian Military to ground its aging equipment following a series of fatal accidents involving its war machines in the last few months.

Budget constraints have been blamed for the slow modernization of defense equipment in the country.

The 2008 state budget raised defense spending to Rp 36.4 trillion ($3.8 billion), but most of the money will be spent on military personnel's welfare.

The government said it was also reluctant to embark on credit export facilities offered by some Western countries for fear of criticism around further accumulation of fresh foreign debts.

Chairman of the House of Representatives' Commission I on security, defense and foreign affairs Theo Sambuaga hailed the start of joint Indonesia-China production of military equipment.

He said the move was a solution to Indonesia's budgetary limitation to replace aging warfare equipment.

"Gradually, we should replace our aging defense equipment," Theo said.

"As we have budget constraints, we should be able to buy them from local companies and only embark on foreign purchases if we really can't produce them.

"That's why joint production is the best option to empower our defense industry," he said.

Two sets of C-802 reported, which does not mean anything.

There is no report of C-801 export to Indonesia and yet PPG621 (one of the photo above), sports an older style C-801

I don't recall Indonesia having any competing territorial claims with China (though I could be wrong on that part).

Also, many of Indonesia's regional rivals (i.e. Singapore, Philippines, Australia and Malaysia to a lesser extent) are aligned with America.

what no one reads defense white paper anymore? shocking!
PRC's policy toward South China Sea can be summarized by this statement from the 2002 white paper.

China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (10+3) as the major channel, has become more practical
In essence, The theme of PRC's foreign policy in her surrendering is to setup a "super regional frame work" Note the SOC, Greater Koreans Free trade zone, the 10+3 and the support of Kevin Rudd's Asia community. In that light, PRC's action can be easily understood. In their view, it is all about economic (TW as the exception), With a strong US as the main backer and a strong regional frame work, it will allow the continue growth of one thing that give China the influence, namely, economic power.

Skywatcher, indonesia is one of the six nations that has a claim in the South China sea's oil fields.

                    kukiyi

China does not have an ally in ASEAN per se. she has good friends, Thailand and burma are considered to be PRC's friends.

                          Yep.

Sorry to go off topic but I've always wondered, what's the nature of the US' military presence in Singapore? What kind of a base do they have there? How many personnel are stationed there? What role does this base serve? Is it Navy only?

                          Thanks,

RI hails China`s offer on military technology cooperation

Beijing (ANTARA News) - Indonesia hails China`s offer for military technology cooperation which among others includes the production and marketing of military equipment, an Indonesian diplomat said.

"Indonesia welcomes the Chinese desire to cooperate in the production of military equipment on the basis of mutual benefit," Indonesian military attache Infantry Col. Yayat Sudrajat at the Indonesian embassy said here on Saturday.

He said that the Chinese military technology had reached advanced stage so that Indonesia desired to explore various forms of military cooperation with Beijing.
"This cooperation also constitutes an effort to reduce Indonesia`s dependence on the West`s military technology," he said.

Sudrajat said that Indonesia-China military cooperation had been running well so far. A number of military officers, including defense ministers of both nations have exchanged visits and held talks.

Recently, Indonesia`s Navy chief Admiral Tedja Edhy Purdijatno met his Chinese counterpart Navy chief Admiral Wu Shenghi on the sidelines of the 60th anniversary of the Chinese navy in April 2009.

During the meeting both sides agreed to increase cooperation, particularly in the education and training, Sudrajat said.

"Although Indonesia did not send military ships to the anniversary, it dispatched its military top officers to attend the event," he added.

Indonesia and China signed defense and security cooperation which was carried by Indonesia`s defense minister Juwono Sudarsono and his Chinese counterpart Cao Gangchuan in Beijing on November 7, 2007.(*)
