(clarity - XF108 was killed off before the XB-70, but its mission intent was in a parlous state and had no chance of a "lazarus" once the XB70 prog was terminated. It did however end up spawning a few other developments including the A5/R5)
Eventually, the radar and weapons system of the F-108 ended up in the YF-12A, of which three examples were built, as the AN/ASG-18 and the AIM-47A. The weapons system proved to be a success in the few operational tests that were undertaken in the '60's, but the follow-on production F-12B was ultimately cancelled. In the long run, the essential combination of long-range radar and 100 mile+ missiles ended up in the F-14 as the AWG-9 and the AIM-54 Phoenix.

No, these were both Myasishchev designs

The Sovs also had a very sexy nuke bomber which didn't progress. (Moskalyov DSB-LK)

They did some interesting designs, even had one which was a dead ringer for an F4D (MiG-21LSh), and an F-111 lookalike (SU24BM) :)

                  • I guess this thread is dead, a simple search of the last clues will get the answer. Too bad I know I enjoyed it.

The Answer is, Major Dominic Salvatore "Don" Gentile
And his wing man was, Captain John T. Godfrey

                    Don Gentile
                    Johnny Godfrey

                    • Not dead. We just have a unofficial "No Google-fu" policy on the quiz threads.

It really isn't uncommon for a question not to get answered.

Thats when the poster gives the answer , and a little background, and we all come out more knowledgeable.

Don't give up on the thread yet.

Agreed; we usually get harrassed by the rest of the Board if we "cheat" and Google the answers. The idea is to test your knowledge, not see who can Google it the fastest. Sometimes I will use Google to make sure I'm on the right track, but that's about it; beyond that, I try to avoid "cheating".

Burt always did like being a little different; he was also the one behind the assymetrical Boomerang twin:
