    • Ok, that's an interesting aircraft. I have no idea what it is. If it wasn't for the obvious fact that the picture is old, plus the aircraft is actually in flight, I'd guess something out of Iran's PR campaign touting their advanced stealth aircraft....

      • Gotta be a test aircraft for the Saab Draken.

        • It's a Saab alright but....what model.

              • During WW2 a famous navy fighter pilot devised a air defense system to protect aircraft carriers and troop ships from kamikaze attacks.

                What was the defense called?

                (extra credit) Who invented it?

                • Big Blue Blanket. Developed by the same Fighter Jock who developed the T Weave.

                  • Correct. Developed by John Thach.

Lt Commander Thach, serving on Admiral Halsey's and Admiral McCain's staff as air operations officer, developed a plan that called for the constant presence of the blue-painted Hellcats and Corsairs over the fleet at all hours. He recommended larger combat air patrols (CAP) stationed farther away from the carriers, a line of picket destroyers and destroyer escorts placed 50 or more miles from the main body of the fleet to provide earlier radar intercepts, and improved coordination between the fighter director officers on board the carriers. Thach also called for dawn to dusk fighter sweeps over Japanese airfields, and the use of delayed action fuses on bombs dropped on runways to make repairs more difficult,

                    • CAP and marauding fighter sweep (strike fighters?) requirements forced major changes in the Air Wing composition in the last couple of years of the Pacific War. And the Hellcats and Corsairs were just the aircraft to do both. I wonder if the US has the right Air Wing Mix now. A topic for another thread perhaps.

As part of the strategy Picket Destroyers were put on the front lines for early warning and air control. I saw today that Mel Gibson is making a movie "Destroyer" about the USS Laffey which got smashed protecting the Carriers.

I am off to the Wild Blue Yonder and will be without reliable communications for a couple of cycles so the thread is open!

Well that just about guarantees it will be overwrought and historically inaccurate. See: The Patriot, Braveheart

But point taken on Gibson's movies, I personally find them very entertaining, but not very accurate.

Unguided 20mm shells pursuing Zeroes as they wildly manuever 20km out.

Hopefully it has a bit more dialog than Dunkirk. I enjoyed that movie, but it was a little terse

                              • No credit away from the USS Laffey and her crew but hopelessly outgunne though they were they also weren't alone that fatal day. I'd actually prefer to see ask account of HMS Jervis Bay's engagement or even HMS Glowworm's fight on the big screen.
If you are emotionally invested in 'believing' something is true you have lost the ability to tell if it is true.
