  • Iowa VLS plans

Saw this over on SinoDefenceForum.com ("Aegis Type ships information"):

Plans had already approved to install 96 VLS cells in the Iowas... Two Mk 41 32-cell VLS and two 16-cell VLS were to have been installed. They were to be recessed 18" below decks to allow for a retractable armored roof to be installed, and would have had some side armor protection.
Does anyone have more details, or can confirm/deny these? What was the location of the 32 and 16 cell units, how much armor, and since when did ships get sunroofs?

I would point in One persons direction as far as this mod pending the depth you want in answer. However ships having sunroofs though isin't so new. Some cruiser classes had retactable roofs (in deck hangar) for air scout ops. The Des Moines (CA134) class 1948 had such a set up in the stern section that either rolled or retacted. I have a pic of it one one of the threads here.

Found the hanger pic of Des Moines. Its in the St Paul vs Des Moines thread in the Naval Thread. We were discussing that there was no elevator and so the stern uni-crane was still in use for plane deployment and return.
