  • Newfoundland Crisis

This situation is still not getting any better, I hope that all the crews make it out safely.

It seems so sureal, here in Eastern Ontario its 21 degrees, ice and winter is the very last thing on my mind right now..yet even as I type this. Some 100 vessels and 500 men are stuck out on the ice, in the icy grasp on winter. Many of those ships have either had had there hulls crushed, pushed up out of the ice, or are listing badly. Twenty four ships have been evacuated, and crews are waiting for help out on the unpredictable Ice.

Aircraft have been flying out with food and fuel to the trapped men on the ice, 2 Canadian Coast Guard Breakers have had there turns being stuck in the Ice aswell.

My thoughts go out to those men...I hope that mother nature releases her ice grip, and the winds die down, so that they all go home to there worrying loved ones..

Um...maybe we should contact Al Gore and see what he has to say about this Gorebal warming trend.

As funny as that is, and it is funny , gunnut. In light of the seriousness of this situation, I think that such jokes should be withheld untill all of these men are safely brought off the ice and the overall situation improves.

I heard about this before but I didn't realise there were that many vessels stranded!

            Unusual happening, what?

            Happened before?

            Global warming?

I am sweating at 41 degrees Centigrade with 85% humidity!

Most unusual for this time of the year!

And how does this compare to the tempetature in the last couple of years... Hotter? Cooler? where you live Brigadier? ie. is the change consistant?

It is awfully hot and what is worse Humid.

It is a total departure from earlier years.

                I live in Kolkata (Calcutta).

I have changed my clothes three times today and bathed an equal number of times and what is alarming is that there have been many heat stroke and sun stroke cases reported during the last three days.

Today on the news, it was said that the Winds are starting to let up, and temperatures are beginning to rise.

There are only now 25 vessels still stuck in the ice, some of which may sink once the ice lets go.

Ray... no offence, but you live in India. That would be like my saying, wow its minus 10 today... Global Warming is messing up the weather.

But I live in Canada, that is not expected, its all about weather systems. If the conditions are right, an arctic air mass can come down to southern Canada any time of the year. Last week we had 17cm of snow tuesday morning, and 23 degrees on Friday.

In your case, if the conditions are right. Tropical air masses can come up and bring high temperatures whenever, any time of the year.

Of course, I didn't mean to belittle their hardship or make fun of the life and death situatioin. I apologize for that.

I hope everyone gets through this ordeal safe and sound.

                        Canmoore,

With all due regards, India being a nation where deprivation is common in many sphere, we do not find a wee bit of discomfort something that requires attention.

We have loadshedding i.e. powercuts for hours because the electricity grid cannot meet the requirement of the country. It was only the other day I sat through 12 hours power cut through all this heat because of some cable fault! And when I asked when will it be restored, I was given solace by this inane statement that people are running about! As if running around would solve the problem! And yet, we accept it without complaints.

Therefore, when I state that it was unusual, you will appreciate that something that was really out of the ordinary had happened.

I am not great in meteorology and you maybe right. But as a layman, I find it extraordinary that all this tropical air masses and El Ninos are happening now and did not occur earlier in my 61 years of life!

As far as experiencing all types of weather, India has all types of terrain and climates. I have been in the Thar desert and boiled and even been at minus 60 degrees Centigrade in the Siachen Glacier, not counting the wind chill factor! Interestingly, I have also seen the slow shrinking of the Glacier since I seen the Glacier on two different occasion with a difference of timespan!

I do not know the reason why this weather is so whimsical.

As a layman all I know is that it is changing and it is getting miserable!

How fickle this World of our is. Deserts that require water, The Doldrums that require wind even Continents that require ice and intense cold. Has God decided to Play Dice after all?

OK, I understand where you are coming from. However, if there wasnt the cruch known as Global Warming to blame every freak act of nature on, then you would probably think nothing more than just that...a freak act of nature. Today however, you can trip on your shoe lace and blame it on Global Warming.

El Nino's have always been with us, El Nino's have only been documented and recorded for 100 years, so we really do not know if they are any worse today than they were in the past.
The 1982 El Nino was the worst El Nino on record, however, no one in 1982 ever cried that the worlds weather is changing.

Ice off N.L. hinders attempts to free sealers
Updated Wed. Apr. 25 2007 1:02 PM ET

                              Canadian Press

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- Coast guard officials are hoping within days to free 39 sealing vessels that remain trapped in stubborn ice of northeastern Newfoundland.

Capt. Brian Penney, a coast guard spokesman, says efforts are being frustrated by shifting winds and ice so thick that four icebreakers are having trouble dislodging the vessels.

The heavy icebreaker Terry Fox has moved into the area off the Baie Verte peninsula, but is being hampered by the severe ice conditions.

Penney says three longliners were forced up on the ice again overnight after they had been freed earlier.

Their crews were able to walk across the ice to another vessel until it was deemed safe for them to return.

He says other icebreakers are heading to the area and will try to get the longliners out to open water or to safe ports.

The remaining 33 vessels concentrated in the main area have been there for 17 days and could be there another few days as the coast guard ships work to get them out.

In addition, a tanker is stuck in the ice near Lewisporte, N.L., and is requiring escort by the coast guard.

Longliners involved in other fisheries are getting snagged in the ice, even after they've been freed previously by the coast guard.

With ice chunks more than a metre thick, some boats have been tipped over, their hulls and keels damaged by the crushing pressure.

Penney says these are the worst conditions he's seen in the last 15 years and have caused one of the most intensive coast guard rescue operations.

At one point, about 100 boats were stuck in the ice, but only one went down after its crew was taken off.
