i have a 10"x16" photo of the crew of the uss hopkins DD-6 (crew of 64 sailors) that i believe was taken around 1907. i believe my great uncle is in the photo and that he was on the uss hopkins when it sailed with the great white fleet on the first leg of the voyge from hampton roads in december of 1907 and arrived in san francisco in may of 1908. postcards mailed back home with postmarks or postcards acquired follow the ports of call of the first leg. we are presently trying to identify my great uncle in the photo (he joined the navy in 1903 at the age of seventeen). would it be of any help to post the photo for someone to give an aproximate date based on the uniforms worn? if so, the digital copy i have is too large to post with my dial up service but i will find someone with high speed service if someone thinks it might be of a benefit to post. thanks

I'm probably the oldest member of this board and that photo was taken 29 years before I was born. I doubt you will find anyone who personally knew him.
Your best bet is contacting other members of your family to see if they have any other photos of him. Then you can compare faces if any other pics were taken when he was about the same age.
You may also want to contact the Naval Historical Center
USN Ships--USS Hopkins (Destroyer # 6)
Their web page has a lot of photos of the ship and you may be able to ask them for a crew list and any photos of the crew.Able to leap tall tales in a single groan.

Deck logs, majority of photos and personnel records are now at the National Archives and cost $$$ to acquire the deck logs and photos. From what I've read, even our shipyard personnel records have been moved from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis to the National Archives.

the only point of posting the photo would be the possibility of someone dating the photo based on the officers and enlisted mens uniforms. i know the uniforms did not change much over the years but it was a shot in the dark. the photo had to be taken between 1903 and 1919. in 1923 my great uncle left active service as a chief boatswains mate so i believe the photo was in his early career which might date the photo around 1906? just looking for someone who knows a lot more about the old navy than i do.
