They were deceived, from what I recall there were 4 F-16s, 3 bombers and one was a 2-seat electronic jamming version. They flew to Iraq via the northern tip of Saudi Arabia, because Jordan and Syria have all their radars facing Israel. Flying at a very slow speed one on top of the other, they appeared as one single plane on radar and when contacted by the Saudi ATC, one of the Israeli pilots who was trained in speaking Arabic, identified them all as a Saudi Arabian private jet. When they were over that Osirak Nuclear plant, they broke formation, swooped down, bombed and headed home fast via the Bakka Valley knowing Iraq would have warned all its neighbours by then.

Are we talking about Osiraq here?

8 F-16As for bombing and 6 F-15As for escort, as far as I can remember.

          Yep.

You have to do the "Captain Drunk" math correction. (divide by 10 for anything Russian, multiply by 2 for anything Western)

I saw the video recording of that mission on TV, with one of the Israeli F-16 pilots being interviewed. He said 3 F-16s actually bombed that Osiraq plant, the 2-seat electronic jamming F-16 with the Arabic speaking pilot went into Iraq too, but not the F-15s and upto this day the Israelis havn't disclosed to the US what precision bombs were used, thats what THEY say.....

It was Colonel Ramon, and he was the number 4 of the first formation.

It was 8 F-16's for the strike and 6 F-15's for escort.

They didn't use PGM's, they had to leave the laser designator pods off because of fuel restrictions. They used 2000. lb iron bombs, and made a pop-up and dive maneuver and practically flew the bombs into the roof of the containment shell.

The Military Channel did a program about the Raid On Osirak. The announcer said, the F-16's were stripped of all equipment not needed to bomb the target, that included ECM equipment!
(Programs like this I assume the announcer knows very little, the only valid information comes from interviews with those who actually were on the project or program.)
The lead F-16 pilot started his dive at the wrong point so he announced on the radio his mistake. At that point he pulled out of the dive, pull up and did a loop then, started his dive again.

A couple of years ago this tape was on the Internet and I downloaded it. That version I have is four minutes and twenty seconds long (34,409KB).

Ramon lead the attack but, he was the fourth to drop his bombs. Israelis to this day insist that they used the standard Mk-84 bomb and not any smart bombs.

Israel had suspected the USA or USSR had spotted their preparations for for the attack on Osirak. An outline of the reactor building was made in the Sinai Desert and the F-16 pilots practiced dropping their bombs on the target. The Israelis thought the satellites of the USA or USSR might have spotted the target.
Israel had some spies on the ground who took some great video from a couple of different directions of the reactor being hit by the bombs!! Eight bombs hit but, one did not explode for some reason.
The Saudi Air Defense did not detect the F-16's, they detected the F-15 top cover.
There was no intelligence to support the Iraqi a heightened alert by the Iraqi defense.

The mission commander and leader of the attack was Lt. Col. Zeev Raz.
