  • US sanctions Rosoboronexport, Sukhoi over Iran

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5247350.stm

The US state department has imposed sanctions on arms firms from Russia, North Korea, India and Cuba for allegedly supplying equipment to Iran.
It said they had broken US laws banning the sale to Tehran of equipment capable of helping the development of weapons of mass destruction.

The sanctions stop US firms working with affected companies - which include Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi.

Russia's foreign ministry condemned the decision as "clearly illegitimate".

Moscow last year signed a deal worth $700m (£380m) to supply surface-to-air missiles to Iran.

Sukhoi has denied having any contracts with Tehran and company chairman Alexander Klementev told Russian radio station Moscow Echo that it had delivered nothing to Iran for at least six years.

    'Credible information'

The US sanctions were ordered under the 2000 Iran Non-proliferation Act.

A state department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the sanctions were imposed after the US obtained "credible information" that the companies had transferred equipment or materials to Iran since 1 January 1999.

"The sanctions apply to the specific entities and their successors, sub-units or subsidiaries and not to their respective countries or governments," the official told Reuters news agency.

Russia's foreign ministry responded by saying that the sanctions were "a clearly illegitimate attempt to make foreign companies work by internal American rules".

In May, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov confirmed that the deal to supply up to 30 Tor-M1 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran still stands.

Along with Sukhoi, Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport has been put under the US sanctions.

The two Indian companies are Balaji Amines Ltd and Prachi Poly Products Ltd, both chemical manufacturers.

The North Korean companies are Korean Mining and Industrial Development Corporation and Korea Pugang Trading Corporation, and the Cuban company is the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.

Indian firm speaks up against the sanctions...

Balaji Amines disputes US claim on chemical supplies to Iran

NEW DELHI: Balaji Amines, a chemical company blacklisted by the US for dealings with Iran, disputed American claims saying it had not supplied any product that could be used in the weapons of mass destruction.

"We have not supplied any products which fall under the Schedule I, II and II of Chemicals Weapons Convention Act to Iran. We have supplied only three products which are used in making life saving anti-biotics," Secunderabad-based Balaji Amines Director Commercial D Ram Reddy said.

Officials of the other company, Mumbai-based Prachi Poly Products which was also sanctioned by the US could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

Balaji Amines had supplied three chemicals triethyleamide, diethylyamide and diethyleacetamide used in the manufacture of ampicillin, amoxyciline and cephalaxin to Iran's Zakaria Tabriz Pharmaceutical and Chemical Co and Antibiotic Sazi Iran.

"Even that supply also we have stopped since December 2005 after an intimation from the external affairs ministry," he added.

Asked if these products could be be used in any way for development of any weapons of mass destruction, Reddy replied in the negative.

"The only other usage is as a foundry chemical," he said, adding that many European companies still continue to supply the same chemicals to Iran.

Reddy said while the company was more concerned about the blame, it wanted New Delhi to support the domestic industry.

"More than our business we are more worried about the blame as we are a company which has consistently complied with all regulations," he added.

No, just the US. If a company breaks US laws, they cannot trade with the US. Simple as that.

The US state department is severe. I think the Rosoboronexport is sobbing bitterly. ;)

It’s nice! :) CIA is going to stop purchase of Russia’s new weapon samples.

Something is not adding up, why sanction Sukhoi over WMD allegations? They gave WMD delivery systems to Iran? The report is vague.

US try to protect the Pax Americana. Sanctions are US’s revenge for the Venezuela contract. Sukhoys haven’t deals with Iran last 6 years.

Sure, if the government is doing business with them, or they are selling to our civilian market, or they are selling to overseas companies that have US contracts.

And no Russian companies were selling Saddam weapons under sanctions either.

It’s allegation. Examples please. If Russia supported Saddam ore Iraqi guerillas by weapons under sanctions, US would get a lot of smoked Abramses pierced by Kornet-E ATGMs (1000-1200mm RHA). US blamed Russia for the selling to Saddam such missiles.

At last, but not at least: Iran isn’t under international sanctions.

That's right, just American sanctions, and it's America that's taking more sanctions against them.

Russian GPS jammers and Russian "advisors" to begin with. You can go read the weapons inspectors reports, if even 1/10 is true...

Nope, not yet anyway. Still can't complain if you sell them stuff and a country with sanctions against them sanctions you...

US Army awarded contracts to Russian GPS jammer
                              Friday 28 March 2003

The US Army awarded $192,000 (£122,000) in contracts in 2002 to a Russian company identified in news reports as a supplier of Global Positioning System (GPS) jamming equipment to Iraq.

The reports said Moscow-based Aviaconversiya has denied selling the jamming equipment to Iraq.

Earlier this year, McClellan said the Pentagon had a "somewhat serious concern" about an online article in hacker magazine Phrack that detailed how to build a homemade GPS jammer.
