there are slums in bangalore too. So they got some affordable housing for the slum dwellers. What happened next. Said slum dwellers rented out the property and went back to the slum, now on a fixed income : D

Something about living in a slum makes living in a building unattractive. Is it the open sky. Like riding a bike.

A friend of mine in the gulf told me a similar story. Govt decided the bedouins needed to stop living in tents out in the desert and live in proper homes. So they built them nice houses and told them it was theirs to do as they chose. Bedouins thanked them. A month later the officials drive over to the desert to see how the bedouins were doing. Turns out they used the homes as stables for their cattle and continued to live in tents.
I was just pointing out the economic necessity of slums. It might rile off a lot of other people, but these places, just like SEZs are economic zones, albeit one that the government is loathe to recognize. It's a sore sight to the country's economic pace, but as you pointed out unless rules are harsh and implemented, nothing will get off the ground. It's the same story with the toilet thing. People, mostly in the north are so used to defecating in the open, that they are not psychologically tuned to use toilets between walls. They like open fields, and the air touching their bottom. It has been going on for generations, and probably will go on for another generation.

I don't think we will do that. Just because it would be protested

      • Ohio State University has got to be the best school ever.

        https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...208-story.html

There's now a bacon vending machine at Ohio State University
Many Ohio State University students are taking a break from studying for final exams by making a bacon run.

Senior Sarah Page, who studies meat science, says the bacon vending machine at the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has turned out to be even more popular than expected. It has to be restocked four or five times a day. It offers cooked bacon strips and bacon bits for $1.

Proceeds will benefit the meat science program. Members of the program are responsible for the bacon machine operation on the Columbus campus.

The Ohio Pork Council sponsored the machine, with bacon donations from Smithfield, Hormel and Sugardale.

The machine will remain on campus through Dec. 13.

            • Best story so far this year

              https://sports.yahoo.com/mugger-targ...010617478.html

              Polyana Viana weighs 115 pounds.

She’s also a UFC fighter with a 10-2 MMA record, with many of her wins coming via painful submissions.

A would-be mugger in Rio de Janeiro clearly wasn’t aware of the latter when he thought a woman of Viana’s stature made a proper target for robbery.

Robber’s cardboard gun doesn’t help his cause
Viana told MMA Junkie that a man with a cardboard cutout shaped like a gun attempted to steal her phone on a Rio street Saturday night.

According to Viana, the man’s decision resulted in a police escort to the emergency room. She told MMA Junkie that he initially asked for the time before declaring that he had a gun and demanding her cell phone.

“He was really close to me,” Viana said. “So I thought, ‘If it’s a gun, he won’t have time to draw it.’ So I stood up. I threw two punches and a kick. He fell, then I caught him in a rear-naked choke. Then I sat him down in the same place we were before and said, ‘Now we’ll wait for the police.'”

According to Sherdog, the rear-naked choke is a popular finishing move for Viana, resulting in a pair of her professional submission victories.

Viana shared images of her bloodied and battered would-be assailant and his fake gun with MMA Junkie. She said by the time she was done with him, he was asking for the police.

“I was fine because he didn’t even react after,” Viana said. “Since he took the punches very quickly, I think he was scared. So he didn’t react anymore. He told me to let him go, like ‘I just asked for the time.’ I said, ‘Asked for the time my ass,’ because he saw I was very angry. I said I wouldn’t let go and that I was going to call the police.

“He said, ‘Call the police, then’ because he was scared I was going to beat him up more.”

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

                      • I'll try to explain the Colonel's list of to do things as of now:
                        #1. Go fishing to relax
#2. Take fishes caught to the bar, drink some scotch, talk about men digging latrines
#3. Order fish n' chips for dinner, come back home with the hottest (+50) waitress
#4. Talk nuke strategy 101 with her, until she leaves
#5. Log into WAB, very patient, doesn't curse, gives out a hyena's laugh

                        The Colonel has mellowed. Right?
