  • $1.5 Billion Bangalore Metro Work to be Innaugrated Today

The face of Indian cities is going in for a radical reform with these new mass transit systems being created.

BANGALORE: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the Rs. 6,395-crore 33-km Bangalore Metro Rail on Saturday pending signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will define the roles of the Centre, the State Government and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRC).

The inauguration of the new office of the BMRC on the premises of Shanthinagar Bus Station will take place at the same programme, scheduled to begin at 3.30 p.m. at the Police Parade Grounds near the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium.

The Centre, the State Government and BMRC are putting in Rs. 5 lakh each as equity to become joint owners of the Bangalore Metro Rail, V. Madhu, Managing Director, BMRC, said. The MoU would be signed in about a week.

To begin with, the BMRC will take up only the seven-km stretch of the east-west corridor — from M.G. Road to Byappanahlli.

    Elevated expressway

The Prime Minister will inaugurate the work on Rs. 450-crore elevated expressway from Silk Board Junction to Electronics City on Hosur Road on National Highway 7.

It will have two-lane service roads, two underpasses, four pedestrian underpasses, two toll plazas and eight bus bays.

It is interesting to see that each Metro project in each city has taken a different funding route. The Delhi metro was funded primarily by the state government and japan. The bombay metro is being funded by the state goverment and reliance (private sectory). the bangalore metro is being funded by the center and the state.

Any sought of development would rise property rates does that mean we shud stop any sought of progress. These roads and metros make the cities liveable and places which are liveable will become expensive.

What development? Livable for whom? Have you seen the traffic snarls lately?
The old princely city of Hyderabad I knew was long gone, replaced by uncouth new money. Still, at least it was a comfortable and unpretentious city. But now with all the "development", just step outside Jublee and Banjara Hills where the politicians live, you'll know what I mean. Ringroad by itself is not a bad thing, but rather than ease up "inner city" it adding up to grow into a giant unmamageble metro. Considering how the previous, smaller version of Hyd was managed, new version scares the hell outta people. Bangalore should be a grim reminder.

What Hyd should concentrate is to build more Metro rails/routes. They have already done so, but with limited sucess. They don't have to build expensive subways, but good clean "onland" rail transport should help reduce congestion. Further they should build sister cities in the state to ease up pressure on Hyd. But these alternatives are not speculative enough, so expect them to be canned by policy makers.

Honestly, do you think that city looks like in that outer ring road link?
