    Pedal Steel Grooviness

Time for some spacey Garcia pedal-steel guitar work on an early Saturday morning. Mocha is going and I'm feeling contemplative-

Nice one S2. A few personal faves there.

Good band. Lead singer has a great voice. Very accessible sound. Judging from this video there was plenty of talent there. Just goes to show how hard it is to make it.

    The Whitlams

I've probably posted this stuff before, but I've been going through some old Oz Rock while I convert it into MP3 for a friend in the US. This is a band with a sad story but beautiful music.

The Whitlams formed in Sydney in 1991 around musicians Stevie Plunder & Tim Freedman. Plunder had attended the same school as legendary former Australain PM Gough Whitlam, so they went with that as a name. Initially lacking a drummer, they performed quirky keyboard driven tunes. "I make hamburgers' was the first of their songs to chart - in late 1995. Sadly thre are no official Whitlams videos on youtube. Pity, there are some good ones:

This period was marked by the recording of breakthrough album 'Eternal Nightcap', the increasing prominence of Freedman as a songwriter, the departure of original bassist Andy Lewis, and the descent into heroin addiction by Plunder.

This quirky & melancholic song about love was a hit in Australia & contains one of the best opening lines in a love song:

On Australia Day (Jan 26) 1996 Plunder took a train out to the Blue Mountains in Sydney & threw himself off a cliff. The album that followed was dedicated to his memory - especially the 'Charlie' suite, two of which are here. The album would go on to win Album of the year in Australia.

This track is not just about Plunder's heroin addiction, but about number of Freedman's friends going through similar problems. The reaction of the crowd here tells you that most of us have had a friend who is struggling in some way. I've been on both sides of this song, perhaps that is why it is my favourite Whitlams song:

This song was written about the day that Plunder died:

After leaving the Whitlams Andy Lewis joined popular Melbourne band the Gadflys before leaving to get a job - he had a family to support. Sadly he also became addicted to gambling on poker machines. Freedman wrote a song dedicated to his friend & to others friends of his who had been addicted. It became one of the band's most successful songs:

In February 2000, while mixing 'Blow Up the Pokies' in L.A. Freedman got the news that Lewis had died. One Friday he had put an entire weeks wages through a poker machine & then hung himself. Freedman recorded the following song & released it as a 'B' side to '...Pokies'. It is a remarkable tribute to two departed friends:
