JAKARTA: Indonesian security forces may have foiled terrorist attacks on last weekend’s summit of Muslim leaders and the famed Borobudur temple complex, the country’s police chief said.

Gen Sutanto told parliament Monday that police received the information during interrogations of suspected militants arrested in last month’s raid on the hideout of Noordin Top, believed to be a key leader of the Al Qaeda-linked group Jemaah Islamiyah.

“It could be the targets of their bombing was the D-8 (Developing Nations) meeting,” which brought together heads of state, prime ministers and government ministers from Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Nigeria, Turkey, Malaysia, Egypt and Bangladesh, he said.

Another possible target was a Buddhist religious ceremony held over the weekend at the ancient Borobudur temples in Central Java province, he told the parliament’s legislation commission.

Sutanto said one of the men, identified only as Mustafirin, said he assembled a two-kilogram bomb similar to those used in last year’s triple suicide bombings on Bail that killed 20 people. “Two days before the raid ... Mustafirin also bought newspapers so he could get information about the D-8 meeting,” Sutanto said, adding the terror suspect was also believed to have surveyed the Borobudur temples for a possible attack. Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, has been hit by a series of terror strikes in recent years blamed on the Jemaah Islamiyah militant network. More than 240 people have been killed, many of them foreign tourists.

An elite anti-terror unit launched a pre-dawn raid on Noordin’s suspected hide-out in the Javanese town of Wonosobo on April 28, killing two of his followers and arresting Mustafirin and one other suspect.

Noordin, the alleged operations chief of Jemaah Islamiyah, escaped. Police said they seized a computer, documents and explosives from his hideout, including the bomb that was allegedly assembled by Mustafirin. One week later they found a similar explosive in Temanggung, a city 30 kilometres from Wonosobo.

Sutanto tried to downplay his comments about the attack to the parliamentary commission telling reporters afterward, “no, no, it’s just a police presumption ... we are still investigating.” AP
