  • Indian Classical Music: Recommendations

    Friends,

I am a great fan of Indian classical music, such as sitar/tanpura/tabla music. However, my collection is small and I want to expand it.

Does anyone have recommendations of what artists or compositions are worthy of listening?

I have been listening to some Ravi Shankar CDs this afternoon that I bought in Princeton, NJ, yesterday. I also bought an excellent CD titled "A Flavor of India" that has the musicians, Akbar Khan, Jan Ul Hassen, and Tafu.

Of course, this post is especially directed towards the Indian members of the Board.

I don't find myself watching a lot of Indian Bollywood movies. I might sometime soon. However, my main interest right now is in traditional Indian music.

First you got to decide which kinda traditional music you are like more..carnatic or hindustani...and then look for vocals or instrumental or a combination of both.

Ravishankar is hindustani vocalist/instrumental....try Chants of India, its pretty good. Check out his discography here,

For history and insights into Indian classical music, I'd recommend this site :

This is a great site for samples/demos:

Thank you both for your recommendations. I did some research and the style of music I have been listening to is North Indian/Hindustani. Thanks for the links and I keep me informed of any more information on the subject.

Also, something I found interesting: Pandit Ravi Shankar's mentor, Ustad Allauddin Khan lived to be 110!
