Islamabad, AJK, NAs get more food aid than Balochistan

    By Maryam Hussain

ISLAMABAD: Azad Kashmir, the Northern Areas and Islamabad together received more aid under the Food Support Programme for poor families than the whole of Balochistan in 2004-05, even though the latter province is the poorest in Pakistan.

Out of the total Rs 2.7billion financial aid distributed during 2004-2005 by the Pakistan Baitul Maal (PBM), Islamabad, AJK and the NAs got Rs 158 million during 2004-2005, while Balochistan only got Rs 109million. Ironically, the Social Welfare Ministry, which controls the Baitul Maal, is headed by Zubaida Jalal, who is from Balochistan.

According to official documents presented in the parliament regarding province-wise distribution of aid under the Food Support Programme last year, Islamabad, the NAs and AJK received Rs 50milion more than the drought and poverty-stricken province of Balochistan. Punjab got the lion’s share of Rs 1.3billion, followed by Rs 570million for Sindh and Rs 514 million for NWFP. Balochistan got only Rs 109million.The report said a total of 557,150 households were given food aid in Punjab, 233,904 households in Sindh, 214,440 in NWFP, 46,119 household in Balochistan and 61,988 in Islamabad, AJK and the Northern Areas.

This food aid was given to AJK, the Northern Areas and Islamabad about a year before the October 8, 2005 earthquake. The report said the federal government had recently increased the rate of food support subsidy from Rs 2,400 to Rs 3,000 per annum per house, to be paid from the current financial year.

Balochistan suffered a massive drought five years ago that killed much of the livestock in the province. Livestock was a major source of livelihood among Baloch and the drought led to a drastic rise in poverty.

A $100 million drought mitigation programme launched with loans from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank reportedly failed to deliver after top officers in the Planning Division purchased expensive 2800 CC cars for their and their families’ use.

The Pakistanis on this forum doth protest too much!

These are just the type of needling that makes the Balochis see red.

Therefore, why should they not rebel, more so when their State is raped for its natural resources like gas, gold and precious metals and then the Gwadar port area up for the grabs for rich Punjabis and the Generals on a freebie Jamboree??
