  • Chinese new light fighter FC1 04 prototype with DSI

Pakistani Air Force placed an order for 150 units & PLAAF is getting 200+. And price is set for $10-$15 million USD per unit. It's a good looking AC but can it compete with 4th Gen. fighter from the west?

The last info I got was the PLAAF was forced with a 75 plane order. The PLAAF would love to cancel this bird if they can.

Yeah they'd be better off spending the money on buying as many Super-Flankers as they can get their hands on, cause the J-10 seems to be coming along slowly and probably won't amount to much of an aircraft compared to its peers, and the J-XX is absolutely miles off. Seems to me the PLA doesn't understand how desperately obsolete they are right now.

And it's clearly going to rule the skies when it carries all of four AAMs plus drop tanks. Obviously it's so good it doesn't even need a decent weapons load out to defeat the enemy.

J-10/JF-17 situation seems to be like T-99/T-90 situation. JF-17 was pretty much designed to be exported. The thinking was that with Pakistan's connection to the Islamic nations, pla might get some export orders. But in reality, there are enough alternative options for plaaf, that JF-17 doesn't really get any interest from them. But yeah, they will most likely be forced to order some to lower the cost of JF-17.

Official as per the number of planes required to keep the production lines open. The Pak order alone doesn't cost justify building this plane. The PLAAF is buying the bare minimum to open the production lines for the Paks.

The only senario one sees plaaf buying in big no.s (fc-1) when it decides to retire the huge no.of clone mig21s in current service.

Pak papers reported, they too would be placing orders for J-10 now, along with F-16s.

JF-17 has basically been China's help in starting off an aviation industry within Pakistan.

It's good enough for Pakistan's use against India and if India ever gets around to making the LCA. Once its made the usual buyers of Pakistani hardware will definitely buy. Saudis for starters.

Aren't the Rafales still to see a sale?

But 75 seems to be small no. for that purpose? As it is fc-1 is quoted in pak newspaper as 15M USD bird. Dont think chinese order will help much in lowering production costs

No, NOT lowering production costs, JUSTIFYING the production line. The small order is the break even point.

OOE, what about replacing old Mig-21 clones? F-7s n all? What'd be used to replace those?

If anything, the J-7 series continues to be a thorn in the FC-1/JF-17 line. It offers similar performances at half the cost.

In all likelihood, there will not be massive replacements for the J-6 and J-7 series. Maintaining such large numbers of relatively low performance planes is neither cost-effective nor combat-effective. You're going to see at least a 1 for 2 if not a 1 for 3 replacement scheme. Therefore, no, the FC-1/JF-17 will never see large number service with the PLAAF. They have much better options.

They're supposedly planning to order a total of 1000 J-10s, and they're optioned for a whole lot of Flankers of various types. As far as I know they currently use the Su-27 and Su-30, not sure about any other variants. I've also read that they were planning on ordering upwards of 300 MiG-31s but I guess that came to nothing.
One thing is for sure, they need to replace those rust buckets they call fighters as soon as possible, it's probably their biggest defence priority. They really do need to suck up to Russia in order to score some more high-tech gear, like BackFires to replace their Badgers and the like.
