      • This was the right move. Limited strike, no warning. Trump needed to respond. Not only Assad, but Kim and all others were watching.

        • citanon,

          no warning.
not quite. the Russians were warned beforehand-- therefore Assad was also warned.

CNN claims there were Russians at the base that was hit. Haven't read all of the story yet to see what their source was, still browsing what news is available. Tread carefully here, this is such a tangled skein of shit- there's no shortage of ways this can blow up the wrong way.

Yup. My main concern though is the proximity to the Russians. No the Russians do not want to get into a shooting war with the US but such proximity can lead to all sorts of clusterfucks.

The Russians should have thought about that before they let Assad's planes take off with Sarin gas.

This was clearly designed to test Trump. A weak response here begs for all sorts of future clusterfucks.

Edit: not to mention the Russians were warned. Apparently the strikes also avoided sections of the base where the Russians were believed to be:

                        • Using chemical weapons makes about no sense for the Syrians, and it makes no sense for the Russians to support chemical weapon useage in Syria.
Only possible outcome was what happened, and even worse in the long term, especially when the US president had expressed in such clear terms a desire to work with them to close the conflict.
But then one party one leader dictatorships are seldom logical.
If the great international efforts for peace in Yemen, Iraq and Libya are anything to go by, this whole region will keep being in a lot of suffering for a lot of time.

Using military against Assad makes about no sense for Trump.

It does, but only for internal policy reasons. Unlike Obama, Trump is in a cool kids league now, poking Putin with a stick.

If there will be no additional actions (aka boots on a ground or additional massive airstrikes against Assad) then all this was a one time show to shut up Democrats and McCain.

Given zero reaction of Russian air defense and moderate reaction from Putin, it looks like a match-fixing.

                              • The major reason I was pleased Trump was picked was Clinton had stated publicly she wanted armed conflict with Russia. I was hoping Trump would resist the Perpetual War Party and maybe he thinks this will be a salve but McCain et al won't stop, this will just embolden them.
