Turkey has granted permission for two waiting US warships to enter the Black Sea. They will remain off the coast of Sochi for the duration of the XXII Olympic Winter Games. The warships are equipped with helicopters should it become necessary to evacuate American athletes or citizens in an emergency.

Ideally, one or both of those ships would be an LHD/LHA class. Surely if the Russians can sail Kuznetsov and Kiev class carriers through the Bosphorus, then the US should be able to send a couple of helicopter carriers in for contingency rescue operations.

The USAF also has C-17 transport craft in Germany (two hour flight) reserved for this purpose. Whether such assets would be granted permission to land on Russian territory is an unknown at this point.

Terrorism is a global threat, there is no absolute protection against that. Any global meeting, global public event becomes natural target for terrorists. But that doesn't mean we should give up living normal life. And arrogance is not good here, everyone is in danger in the modern World, and noone knows where the terrorists can hit next time and who will suffer then.
