  • Middle-eastern armored cav, coming to a penal colony near you!

    Hello Wabbers,
I have managed to procure two tickets for the Cricket World Cup match between India and Pakistan in Adelaide, on 15 Feb 2015! My mate who was supposed to join me bailed out due to wife commitments, so I have an extra ticket. If any of you are interested in joining me in witnessing this epic, give me a shout! This is also my first time ever down under, so if you're in NSW, Victoria or South Australia, I'd love to have a beer with you.

    Cheers

Just got back from what was arguably the greatest sporting event to experience live. It was also my first time in Australia, and I'd like to share a couple of things that I learned on the trip:

    1. Aussies don't speak English. Or any other human language for that matter.

    2. Adelaide is an amazing city. Sydneysiders and Melbournistas tend to look down on it though.

    3. I'm no longer used to hot weather and I need a couple of days of acclimitization after flying in from a Canadian winter.

    4. I'm no longer used to so many Indians.

    5. Indians and Pakistanis can be civil while rooting for their respective teams. I saw only two people being escorted out of the stadium for disorderly conduct.

All in all, a great trip. I'd love to go back and see some more Australia.

Glad you had a good time.

Its called Strine. And people criticize Americans for being ignorant about the places they visit. ;)

Adelaide is very pretty and a nice place to visit for a few days. After that you exhaust all the possibilities & it becomes a wee bit boring. That is one of the reasons we folk tend to make fun of it. That & the serial killers. Always with the serial killers. Mate of mine once joked 'we should just put police tape around the entire state.

My family used to own a chunk of the far northern suburbs of Adelaide. One of my ancestors walked for 1000kms with a half dozen of her kids to get out of Adelaide, so I get to say mean stuff.

      3. I'm no longer used to hot weather and I need a couple of days of acclimitization after flying in from a Canadian winter.
it is a pretty hot place in summer, and you copped a few stinkers. You've gone soft. ;)
      4. I'm no longer used to so many Indians.
Catch a taxi in Melbourne, you'll feel right at home. Even better is you speak Punjabi.

      5. Indians and Pakistanis can be civil while rooting for their respective teams. I saw only two people being escorted out of the stadium for disorderly conduct.
Must be the Australian influence, we tend to be a peaceful lot at sporting events. Too busy drinking.

All in all, a great trip. I'd love to go back and see some more Australia.
And we'd love to have you back. If you are heading to Melbourne give me a shout. :)

Like I said, not a human language. Sat next to a bogan on the city tram (lovely trams btw) and could barely catch a few words off the drunken mumbling. This was a wednesday morning.

Did a quick google search for adelaide serial killers. Turns out the culprit in the Snowtown murders was a Queenslander. Makes much more sense now :D

Lovely weather in Adelaide for the entire week btw. From what I heard, Melbourne and Sydney tend to have more extremes in climate.

The area seems to have had a very rocky economic history, which is a shame given how many resources it is blessed with.

You try shoveling your car out of snow for days and then walking around in 39 deg C. I had forgotten the old sock smell, and the dorm I stayed at was kind enough to give me an instant refresher :puck:

Taxi drivers are by default Punjabi world over, Adelaide included. It is written. I once had a white taxi driver in Saskatoon and I was too shocked to say a word.

Believe you me, there wasn't much Australian about Adelaide on that Saturday and Sunday. There were spontaneous outbreaks of Bollywood DJs in the middle of CBD streets well into Monday morning. I don't think the Adelaiders knew what to make of it.

I really wish I could stay longer. 7 days is all I could get :( Will have to come back for Melbourne and NZ sometime.

If you like trams Melbourne is your city. One of the largest tram networks in the world.

As for the language, Bogan can be a bit tricky. Fortunately I can understand & make myself understood in it, so if you ever come over I can translate. :)

The Snowtown murders were committed by multiple killers. Just something about the place that turns people bad:

Not at all. Melbourne's weather is more changeable, but better. We don't get as many super hot days & it rarely gets below 5 degrees in he depths of winter anywhere you'll be staying. Sydney is more humid, but nothing compared to India.

The area seems to have had a very rocky economic history, which is a shame given how many resources it is blessed with.
Its always been a bit marginal. One of the reasons my mob left in the 1860s was that there was no more good land to be had. The lady I spoke of arrived within the first decade of settlement & within a generation most of the good land was gone. Back in the 80s a friend of a friend was the senior economic bureaucrat in SA. They used to fudge the figures to show that the economy & population were merely flatlining rather than shrinking.

Hey man, you chose Canada. Did they not tell you about the snow? ;) Should have headed south east!

Yeah, I had great fun in the US talking cricket to the cabbies. In Melbourne it is about 70% Punjabi, 10% African & 20% 'other' (including other parts of India & the subcontinent). With the exception of the occasional scary looking Serbian guy (I swear the dude was on the run from the ICJ or something) I always find something to chat about. One night I got dropped off at home by the cousin of the guy who runs the Indian food store at the end of my street!

Australia gets into your soul very quickly. Just be thankful you guys weren't in Adelaide long enough to start putting bodies in barrels.

Look forward to it. Give me a shout when you are thinking of it & I'll give you a few tips on time of year & stuff to do.
