  • The U.S. has tested more than 8,500 specimens for coronavirus. That doesn't equal 8,500 patients. | NBC | Mar 10 2020

hrm, yes i suppose this applies for other countries too

They take at least two samples per patient. Some times three. Then there is serial testing for some patients which is more tests on just one patient.

Meaning unless specified you can't make out the number of people that have been tested. Only how many tests have been performed so divide that by two to get a ball park figure for people tested.

Number of tests conuducted to date | CDC | Mar 15 2020

    CDC : 4069
    Public health labs : 18,644

    Pottering along : )

That is understatement. I would suggest that since Nunes is a public figure of governmental authority, but is in no way any expert on epidemiology, he should be deferring to the judgement of experts. He should be well informed of those expert opinions before voicing his own. Instead, his suggestions are opposite expert opinion, and are endangering people, and the House should look at censoring him for this, or worse if they can show that experts have recently briefed him and suggested a very different course of action.

      • I made my weekly grocery run this evening to my usual store, a discount grocery chain store, and they were clean out of:
        • the usual toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and bottled water
        • bread and bagels (there were only one type of hamburger buns on the shelves)
        • rice
        • beans
        • tuna
        • eggs
        • pasta
        • all fresh meat and poultry

        Also:
        • 90% of frozen chicken products
        • most canned, ready to eat foods (except canned fruits and vegetables, of which there was plenty)
        • 95% of peanut butters
        • a third to half of the produce section
        • about 3/4 of the packaged deli meats

Overall the shelves in the store were about 1/3 completely empty. Many other items that were still stocked were only fairly lightly stocked. Maybe 1/3 of the usual amount of cereal was on the shelves. Plenty of Hot Pockets, frozen burritos, and pizza rolls though. I scored a 120-ct packed of Totino's three-meat pizza rolls for $3.99. Bought some sour cream to dip them in. I usually don't eat that kind of stuff, but I started running out of my usual food options. There were 10 cans of refried beans in another section of the store that must have gotten overlooked, so I got one of those too. A couple small jars of peanut butter among the 20 or so jars left on the shelves too. There was plenty of fresh milk so I got my usual half-gallon.

Anthony Fauci has been working at the National Institutes for Health for over 50 years and has been head of the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases since 1984. He cut his teeth battling AIDS in the 80s and is in the top few people in the world when it comes to understanding infectious diseases. He not only knows more about infectious diseases than anyone any of us know, he probably knows more than everyone any of us knows combined.

Devin Nunes is a political hack.

Anyone who has to spend a nanosecond contemplating which one to listen to is a certifiable idiot.

I am fortunate to live in a area with a lot of East/South Asian food stores. They don't generally sell fresh meat, but they have enough rice, noodles & sauces of various sorts to sink an aircraft carrier. Fortunately this concentration of small grocery stores means that there are a number of local butchers. A few cups of rice, curry paste, chicken and a few vegetables can feed me for a week.

Even more fortunately I am a relatively short tram ride from the huge Queen Victoria Market, which is packed with a bewildering array of cheeses, cured meats, fresh meats from land and sea (you can buy crocodile, kangaroo & emu on a good day) and every fruit & vegetable in season. Of course, that might get closed if there is a major outbreak here, but for the moment I can get pretty much anything I need.

His defense is avoiding panic. You don't have to stockpile for months which creates shortage for every one else and makes them anxious.

This is a positive feedback loop. Means it gets worse over time.

Why would they close it ?

                Italy isn't closing super markets.

In Wuhan they made people order their groceries online only.

I don't see much stockpiling there and he could not leave his housing complex since Jan 28

The Queen Vic market is like so many other food markets - crowded at certain times of the week. Supermarkets are (normally) a lot less busy & the people are a lot more spread out. Shopping carts are an ideal 'social distancing' device.

I can imagine the Queen Vic being shut down along with other places that attract big crowds. Not for certain, but it wouldn't shock me.

                  • just a reminder, here's what POTUS has said in regards to COVID.

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”

February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”

February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”

February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.”

February 25: “I think that's a problem that’s going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.”

February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

February 26: “We're going very substantially down, not up.”

February 27: “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”

February 28: “We're ordering a lot of supplies. We're ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn't be ordering unless it was something like this. But we're ordering a lot of different elements of medical.”

March 2: “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?”

March 2: “A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they’re happening very rapidly.”

March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”

March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”

March 5: “The United States… has, as of now, only 129 cases… and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!”

March 6: “I think we’re doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down… a tremendous job at keeping it down.”

March 6: “Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”

March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”

March 6: “I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault.”

March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on CoronaVirus.”

March 9: “This blindsided the world.”

March 13: "I take no responsibility."

                      What. The. FUCK.

I work in the medical industry, specifically logistics and admin. I've ordered a lot things. To date, I've never ordered either "elements" nor "medical", and certainly not "a lot of different elements of medical".

I should try that though: Line Item #175 "Medical"

                      Eh, oohhhhkaay...and what's your UoM?

                      "Element"

Oh ok, that makes zero sense but we'll go with it anyway.

American waitresses and waiters work below minimum wage. They relied on tips to survive. They also do not have health wage protection. They don't work. They don't get paid. Landlords and grocery stores don't care.

Also, there ain't enough snobbish people around to order an $80 steak for take out for such a restaurant to survive on such orders,

Dr Fauci is extremely right but that doesn't mean that Nunes is in the wrong for wanting people to be able to still pay bills and buy food.

                          https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/...id-coronavirus

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Monday proposed giving $1,000 to every American adult as lawmakers scramble to try to bolster the U.S. economy amid growing concerns over the coronavirus.

Romney outlined a handful of proposals on Monday, saying that while the Senate should take up the House-passed coronavirus package, Congress also needs to start working on additional steps.

"We also urgently need to build on this legislation with additional action to help families and small businesses meet their short-term financial obligations, ease the financial burden on students entering the workforce, and protect health workers on the front lines and their patients by improving telehealth services," Romney said in a statement.

Concerns about the worsening coronavirus outbreak in the United States, as well as growing restrictions on American businesses, injected fresh turmoil into the market Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average sinking 2,442 points during intra-day trading.

I did the "panic Buy" Saturday.

Bought 4 cans of coffee. Funny all the above mentioned items were out but the only people in the coffee isle were military/retired military guys. Plenty on the shelf.
The corona virus may be bad, but the world really doesn't want to see/isn't ready for a retired Gunny that is caffeine deprived.

The item that surprises me the most is bleach. Don't people do laundry? If so They should already have it. Maybe pick up a extra gallon for disinfecting purposes.
One gallon of bleach makes 48 gallons of cleaning solution. No need to buy 5-10 gallons, yet I say people doing it till the shelves went empty

Vinegar is also a good idea in that regard. Also safer to use, especially around pets and children.

A claim on social media alleges that “every election year” has had a major disease outbreak. The claim misleadingly dates these notorious disease outbreaks to match with election years.
