I've taken a taxi to a 5-star hotel. I've also taken a rickshaw to a $6/night hotel. To quote the estimable James Franco... same-same, but different...

Interesting aside: neither the taxi driver nor the hooker will give you the time of day for any number of PPPs.
Is that a 5 star hooker? Or the Truckstop version?

          • true, But I'm trying to determine the price of a taxi ride in relation to the price of a hooker.

So what are we measuring here & how? Is this just 'how far does your dollar go in X nation?

I have a fair idea what a taxi ride to a 5 star costs in Melbourne & Bangkok.

Here, the taxi will cost you $A55-65. Maybe a bit more in dire traffic. Living in an area with a big drug problem I have had the occasional proposition from the local equivalent of a 'crack whore'. It was a fair bit more than that, and I wouldn't touch them with somebody else's equipment. I assume attractive women who occasionally bathe & are not covered in rashes, sores & track marks charge multiples of $A65.

I don't recall specific prices from Bangers for taxis or what prices the 'street girls' were quoting but the taxi is still a fraction. Of course, Bangkok is pretty spread out & traffic can be terrible, so perhaps if it took you two or three hours to your hotel.... Of course, if you prefer a high class hooker.... ;-)

Not sure if I have proved anything here other than that I know some stupidly obscure stuff, but there it is. :-)

              • Rent a car and take your spouse. Safer, cheaper and happier.

In all seriousness though try to avoid catching a taxi from an airport to hotel. Even if speak the language fluently and know where you are going you will end up paying around 20% more than would be normal. If you do not know the language or where you are going you are basically at their mercy. If you can catch bus do it. Also know where your hotel is - book it before arriving. Sometimes they may have their own transport to take guests to and from the airport. No harm in asking the hotel.

                • Variety is the spice of life. Why trade a lifetime of peace for a spouse. Get an Uber, then go hunting in Craiglist. Backpage was better, but the FBI seized it. Discreet. Thrill. Satisfaction.

I'm temporarily renting in a similar neighborhood. Never been propositioned though. I think they either assume I'm a cop or someone else who it's risky to approach. I don't interact with anyone in my neighborhood, and I don't spend any time doing anything there either. I'm only ever on my way to or from somewhere else.

I'm pretty sure the way it works is the crack whores, when they hop in the car of the older white guys cruising slowly through the neighborhood, after they get paid for spending 15 minutes talking about Seinfeld or something in the guy's car, then they bring their money back to their pimp, who is also their crack dealer.

I suspect our neighbourhoods are a bit more different than you think. It is actually a very affluent inner city neighbourhood and pretty safe. Real estate per square meter is among the top ten suburbs in Melbourne. However, about 10 minutes from here is a a big housing estate dating from the days when this was the poor part of town (which it was when Dad was born). Still lots of poor people there. Sadly that is the hub of the drug problem, but it is fairly localised. Only a few small blocks. I walk past the busiest drug corner in Melbourne regularly. Not pretty, but not especially dangerous, even at night.

There isn't any regular street prostitution, just one or two desperate addicts trying it on. Because prostitution in a brothel or using an escort is legal here the street trade is pretty small. There are actually a couple of legal brothels within a few hundred meters of my place. Judging by the men & women I see entering & leaving they aren't aiming at the top of the market. Given a choice between illegal sex with a sick looking, unattractive woman who might give you a disease or rob you, and legal sex with an attractive young Chinese/Vietnamese/Thai woman who has regular disease checks and won't rob you there are very few men who are that desperate to save the money.

                          • Ooookkkk now. Are we moving from tariffs on steel and aluminum to tariffs on hookers? Even though I been to the Philippines dozens of times between 1988-2008 this is new stuff to me...

                            • Palau doesn't know it at the moment but in the long run they are better off without the Chinese tourists and speculators.

Mobs of Chinese tourists can be very devastating to a regions environment particularly if they feel you are inferior to them. Spell Despoil with a capital 'D".

I'm sure its all above board. Everyone is simply discussing different measures for purchasing power parity. Big Macs, Mars Bars, taxi fares, hookers. Just simply choose the measure you are most familiar/comfortable with. Someone should do a paper comparing the accuracy of all the metrics.
