  • Good for Mexico and Canada. Hit those states the hardest which Trump needed and carried and maybe those folks will understand how a not ready for prime time player really wasn't ready for prime time despite what he claimed.

As far as bilateral agreements good luck with that Sarah. There is no reason for them to come to the table for that. Once you allow the door to open for alternate suppliers, and they will show up, it will be hard to displace them especially if reliability isn't a strong point with the original supplier now.

    • The sad reality is that Washington DC got both Mexico and Canada by the balls and all, Trump, Trudeau, and Peņa Nieto know it.

      • EU balancing duties will be levied from July.

"This is a measured and proportionate response to the unilateral and illegal decision taken by the United States to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminium exports. What's more, the EU's reaction is fully in line with international trade law. We regret that the United States left us with no other option than to safeguard EU interests," EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said.

        • You guys realize that tariffs are bad and the EU, Mexico, and Canada are just shooting themselves in the foot, right?

          • Canada produces more aluminum than the entire United States, with America being Canada's largest aluminum and steel export market. Even if all the shuttered mills, and factories were to come back online in America. The demand for imported aluminum and steel would still far outstrip production. Manufacturers will simply pay for the steel and aluminum due to demand that will not go away over night, and the increased cost will be passed down onto the consumer. These tarrifs will hurt the Americans far more than they will hurt Canada, Mexico, and the EU.

What baffles me is that Canadian steel and aluminum is in American tanks, and Jets. Yet Trump believes us to be a national security threat, Unbelievable!!

You realize WHY this is happening in the first place, right?

That doesn't make the "retaliation" any less stupid.

Had the Mexican, Canadian, and EU governments not have slapped retaliatory tariffs they would have been run out of office faster than you can say peep-pee tape!

How about we talk about how colossally stupid the US tariffs were in the first place?

                    Seriously man, What The HELL.

                    • can't separate the political from the economy.

in any case Mexico is very blunt about their tariffs specifically targeting Republicans.

                      https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/05/u...ico-nafta.html

Mexico’s list was designed to hit at parts of the United States represented by high-profile Republicans, Mexican officials have said, including steel from Vice President Mike Pence’s home state of Indiana, motorboats from Senator Marco Rubio’s Florida, and agricultural products from the California district of Representative Kevin McCarthy, the House majority leader.

Farmers, who are among those most vulnerable to the Mexican tariffs, said the tariffs would devastate American agriculture.

                      • Somehow, I don't see Trump, Trudeau, nor Peņa Nieto getting too worried. Who gets the tarrif monies? Hint: it should ain't the people nor the government selling the stuff. It's a friggin tax grab and I, for one, do not see Trudeau eliminating it even if Trump cuts his.

Exclusive: Trump invokes War of 1812 in testy call with Trudeau over tariffs

President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a testy phone call on May 25 over new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration targeting steel and aluminum imports coming from Canada, including one moment during the conversation in which Trump made an erroneous historical reference, sources familiar with the discussion told CNN.

According to the sources, Trudeau pressed Trump on how he could justify the tariffs as a "national security" issue. In response, Trump quipped to Trudeau, "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" referring to the War of 1812.

The problem with Trump's comments to Trudeau is that British troops burned down the White House during the War of 1812. Historians note the British attack on Washington was in retaliation for the American attack on York, Ontario, in territory that eventually became Canada, which was then a British colony.
Justin Trudeau does, however, have an ace up his sleeve to get whatever he wants from Trump.

Trudeau and Nieto probably aren't worried much at all-- everyone is well aware that Trump is the aggressor here, so their respective polities will accept greater economic pain as a result. hell, they'll probably get more popular for standing up to the loudmouth.

Trump? in the short term, probably not too much. economy is still booming, Trump is very popular with his base. but the latter doesn't apply to all members of his party, so this may very well have an effect on the midterms...and if it does, then Trump's agenda will be dead in the water.

                              • Donald Trump promised a trade war. Should we let his voters get what they asked for

Donald Trump's reckless trade war would hurt his own voters and might even tank the U.S. economy. Maybe we should let them touch that hot stove anyway.
