BMW: The Greatest Car Ever Made Says Top Gear’s Hammond

full disclosure - I have been driving BMW 3s since 1994 ranging from 318, 325 to 328. My current 3 is a 2010 328i. Can't complain besides the high maintenance fee.

If it was anybody else, you could probably just dismiss it as babel or a momentary lapse of judgement. But to hear from Richard Hammond, a guy who achieved global fame by sitting behind the wheel of some of the world's fastest and most exotic cars, is an entirely different matter.

To say nice things about pricey German cars is as common as cliches, but for the co-host of Top Gear to throw out ''best car ever made," that's cause to pull over and listen.

"To a degree you really could make a case for them being exactly that," Hammond says in the attached video, pointing to BMW's engineering pedigree and a reputation for quality that assures you their cars will "be here in ten years."

Hammond's revelation first came to light in a column he wrote for London's The Daily Mirror, in which he called the new 3-Series "three-mendous." In hilarious fashion, this critic turned fan actually berates himself for not being able to find faults, and even admits how much easier it is to be critical then complimentary.

All of this comes as the new 3-Series marks the 6th generation or platform update for a model that's nearly 40 years old. It also comes at a time when consumers appear to be in agreement with Hammond, as BMW just posted its best first-quarter sales ever, with a total of 425,000 more going to China than the U.S.

"Their cars are not about cutting edge, brand new technology, breaking new ground, pushing things further," Hammond says. "Their cars are about doing what's already known...and doing it extremely well."

Is BMW making the best car ever? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section, visit us on Facebook, or via Twitter @MattNesto.

So great you can't even carry a toolbox in the back.

Guess that counts all the tradies out.

Look, when I retire, have a missus that wants more than what she's earned, or basically, become a condom on the brick of progress a-la, accountant, lawyer, conveyancer, diplomat or some other tool whose work vehicle is something they drive to the office to keep up with the ego of other companies or stratospheric reaching on the government payroll, then, perhaps, I'll buy a BMW... and then, people will care about me.

You have never experienced by being pampered at the dealership until you own a Bimmer. I could take a loaner but I preferred to have some 20 years old cute looking intern drives me back to work and picks me up when they are done with my oil change.

The 16-year-old apprenticing girls at my local Citroen dealership are hotter than the ones from the BMW dealership next door. Or the Mercedes dealership down the street.

Nice cars but to truly be considered the greatest car ever, they should be slightly more affordable. Usually, BMWs are beyond the reach of the common man. And the greatest cars we look back on were produced for everyone, like VW Beetle, Fiat 500 and whatever else.

BMW at first produced cars for the masses. Only they made them so good, people wanted to pay more.

You know, owning a BMW is serious business, for BMW, and the owner. But, as much as I like the marque, I cannot see myself making the effort of contacting BMW, if I have the money. I think BMW is the best car marque in the world.
