I was somewhat dismayed that a thread about destructive aliens threatening to kill us all turned into a discussion about Tarek's and gross's girlfriends....but on further reflection it makes perfect sense

    Carry on.

We have Yellowbelly's seal of approval. This thread is now completely worthless and there is no need to continue posting here.

But you know we will anyway. We're gluttons for punishment

This has to be one of the worst derailings I have ever seen here. It went from theoretical, to gross, to bizarre, to pub chat! Amazing!

Mate, knowing what we know about Tarek's girlfriends, are you sure you wanna be going about bragging about what you've done with them?

Which one of Tarek's girlfriends was it, the SG-1 fanatic or the vampire the blood sucker?

All right - one more time

It occurred to me last night that even if we wanted to "hide" from E.T. in the long term we can't. I remembered that Astronomers are currently engaged in a race to develop scientific instruments capable of detecting Earth sized planets in orbit around (at first) local stars. They are also developing instruments capable of analysing the light spectrum of such planets with the aim of identifying the chemical composition of their atmosphere. They expect to be able to detect oxygen, water vapour and nitrogen and determine the proportion of each in the atmosphere. They even hope to be able to identify the presence of complex chemical compounds like chlorophyll and "artificial chemicals like CFC'S if present.

Fast track a century or so ahead and we should be able to the same thing across even greater distances. Obviously if we can do it some else can another species. I think this severely limits our ability to hide.

What if they are not that advanced but advanced enough to travel to Earth and what if they are a warlike people like the Klingons?

Anyway if they come to Turkey, they will regret it!

Or just to colonize another planet, I don't think that habitable planets are that common in the Universe.
