global warming in the real world

I believe you all are missing the point. The Earth's ecological system is extremely complex where everything from biology to geology influences the system. Global warming may be natural (though there are some who believe that we should be having an ice age) but it doesn't mean that CO2 emissions don't have an effect. It doesn't mean that greenhouse gases don't act as a feedback mechanism and act as an amplifier and an accelerator. The Earth is not an infinite sink and dumping milliions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere while at the same time destroying the mechanism that acts as a natural counter will have an impact. Therefore, I may not agree entirely with Gore or with other extremists but I believe that we are having a negative impact on the environment and on Earth's eco system making things alot worse.

Hey I agree with you too!?!?!? it's amazing how often we agree...
I believe the world travels in cycles and that these global warming happen roughly every 10,000 13,000 years. When the earth heats up, the polar ice caps also heat up. You may attribute biblical and other religous floods to this affect!

Doesn't mean that it does either.

    1) How do you know it's not an effective infinite sink wrt CO2?

    2) What mechanism is being "destroyed"?

A belief based on other beliefs.

how come Antarctica is cooling, and its ice sheet growing then?

Hey its not a constant thing. it's like the stock market -- daily ups and downs but a trend in one direction or another. So a local downtrend if there was one doesn't mean anything.

Indeed, but you need to tell the IPCC that. They believe a short uptrend does mean something.

As for trends over a decent time period, care to explain the medieval warm period, or the mini ice age an subsequent 400 year warming we've been experiencing?

Kind of. It was built as a temple to the Roman gods, most of whom, but not all, were borrowed from the Greeks.

Basically, "man made" global warming scenario relies too much on correlation and very little scientific model. That correlation is increase CO2 gas in the atmosphere is causing the earth to warm up.

I can come up with correlations all day but it doesn't prove a thing.

Fact: the world was colder between 1940s and 1970s than it is from 1980s until today.

Fact: we had virtually no regulations on air polution until after 1970.

Conclusion: air polution standards started the global warming trend.

Fact: the world was colder between 1940s and 1970s than it is from 1980s until today.

Fact: atmospheric atomic tests were banned after 1960s.

Conclusion: atmospheric atmoic tests kept the earth cool.

Supporting evidence: scientists agree that nuclear winter is a very real threat.

    See how easy that was?
Bad examples. Neither of the correlations listed include any sort of mechanism to explain the relation between the two observations. Anthro GW has a definite mechanism, a faulty, incomplete one quite possibly, but still, a reasonable mechanism that is compatible with current physical science.

What is the mechanism? And you'd better be thinking of something more complicated than "simple greenhouse", cuz that won't cut it.
