China's GPS and phone for NorthStar 1 (Beidou 1) system

NorthStar 1 only covers China and around. It has the telecommunication function other than the navigation and positioning. NorthStar 1 basically was a trial system for the next stage.

NorthStar 2 will have the global coverage. The first satellite will be launched this summer.

So what is this system and what does it do? Is this a cell phone with a GPS receiver on it or is it a satellite phone system? If that's the case, I thought we already tried that when it was called Iridium, and it was a huge flop.

NorthStart is an American GPS-like system.

NorthStar is different than the American GPS. The NorthStar needs to send signals to the satellite and then this system has the telecom functions.

This is a satellite phone.
