2x Laundry Detergent

I went to the grocery store (Rainbow Foods [Roundy's]) and swung by the aisle with laundry detergent to pick up one of those big bottles of Xtra... and were curiously smaller. Not a single bottle of old-school laundry detergent to be found anywhere, it was all 2x concentrated.

I wondered why, so I did a search on Google and came across a Wal-Mart PDF... apparently the entire country has converted to 2x detergent as a result of them.
Quote:
On September 26 Wal-Mart president and CEO, Lee Scott, announced a bold initiative to sell only concentrated
liquid laundry detergent at U.S. Wal-Mart discount stores, Supercenters, Sam’s Clubs and Neighborhood Markets
as part of its commitment to sustainability and helping people to save money and live better. With approximately 25
percent of the liquid laundry detergent sold in the United States sold through Wal-Mart Stores, transitioning to only
concentrated liquid laundry detergent demonstrates Wal-Mart’s unique position to drive change across an entire
industry for the benefit of business, customers and the environment. With the first wave of stores transitioning
October 1, the conversion is slated to be completed by May 2008.
Quote:
Concentrated detergent has a positive impact on the environment (plastic, water and transportation savings) and will
change the way our customer shops. Wal-Mart expects to sell more than 800 million units of concentrated detergent
over the next three years, which will benefit the environment by:
  • Saving over 95 million pounds of plastic resin
  • Preserving more than 400 million gallons of water
  • Conserving over 520,000 gallons of diesel gasoline
  • Reducing more than 125 million pounds of cardboard

Maybe it's the same thing but they're just giving you half the amount and charge you like usual...

Yeah, the fill line should probably be properly demarcated. This wasn't something the companies that make laundry detergent did because they wanted to, Wal-Mart (as seller of 25% of all laundry detergent in the US) forced their hand by refusing to sell "1x" detergents.
