EMP or Microwaves...can it disable explosives??
I was wondering if anyone can explain to me, if some sort of EMP device, or a giant microwave dish would be able to fry the wiring or detonators of explosives at a distance.
This would be incredibly usefull in the current geurilla wars, were the weapon of choice are IED's and suicide bombs. This defensive sheild could be fitted onto a vehicle an sweep and area, that way any suicide bombers or IED's could be disabled. |

If the microwave generator could not sweep the nearby area, but would be used as ´´focused´´to disable an already found IED, it would not be very incredibly useful, but simply another (but expensive)tool .

The probem is that it permanently fries anything with a circuit. Like stated above, if you drove around doing that I have to believe you wouldn't make it very far up the road. The only other down fall is that its a burst type event not a sustained emission.

It might be effective for a very short time, but considering how easy it is to harden electronics against EMP I doubt it would be an efficient use of resources. Terrorists would simply use resistant electronics, or simply not use electronic detonators at all. Mechanical timers and other devices can be used which would not be affected at all.

OK i see now, thanks.
What about a large sonic pulse, to create a vibration large enough to set off detonators. I know that this could be hazardous, because then only civilians would be victims of these IED's, but at least we reduce our own victims. And maybe turn the tide of public support against the enemy. And I am sure, the noise of a huge sonic device would be enough to make civilians run away, as it means any car-bombs, IED's in the area will detonate. |
