That would make some sence, look at the way the U.S. military is moving with its technology. Unmaned drones equiped with hellfires gives the military the firepower to attack from the confort of home. Translate that into an anvanced speacies and you get unmaned starships equiped to unleash all kinds of hell.

why will some aliens be interested in us??
1. If they are nearly as advanced as us then the comm will be of minimal use as we cannot even pay a visit to our neaarby plant leave aside some other solar sytsem.
2. If theya re primitive donot expect a reply.
3. If theya re much more advanced they must have met so many civs like us and would have already lost their curiosity. Theonly reaons they might be interested is if they lwnt some resources from earth which is again strange as they might find all that they want from other planets around without facing the inconvenience of killing/anhillating so many living beings for noone is ready to give up his land/resources.
4. In case they are just inquisitive then to avoid the invonvenience of being explored by stupid species like us and sharing their technology with us they would like to do teir research on us without us knowing it . This might even explain the UFO sightings (iif theya re true).
5. Teh only other reason might be that they are interested in making earth their hiome( maybe due to some reason they are planetless and want earth. Then they wil come themselves.will ots of weapons to kil us all LOL.. The point is why are we trying to contact a strongr species which can surely kill us all in seconds(as we all know taht the more power a nation/species is it subdues others to gain more space for itelf.Peaceful coexistence for us will be if we are stronger or at least similar in capapcity of technology and military might and frankly we cant do anything about a species who can come all the way here to meet us . They will be strong nough to anhilate us or subdue us.

You two need to go to a used bookstore and look up "Fred Saberhagen" and "Beserkers." I think you'll enjoy the series of very creative short stories.

Me too, thanks for the book suggestions. Anyone here find the theory that the Greys are acctually genetically engineered beings for the sole purpose of enduring the rigors of space travel?

The sequel "Anvil of Stars" is quite good. What is it with writers of so-called Hard SF? Is there a union that demands turgid prose? I love the sub-genre, but it can be damn hard to wade through.

Having said that, it's not that ruddy chick-lit crap.

Why don't we start a thread on speculative ET motivation etc. By all accounts the Vatican has a working group. Half of us (the better half) post drunk now and then, so surely we can come up with something to rival the Church Of Rome.

for less turgid prose, might I suggest Neal Stephenson, an alternative near-future writer, and Iain M Banks 'culture' series

there's only one thing worse than chick-lit books: chick-lit movies; ah the things we do to keep the 'significant other' happy....

no, but your post reminded me of a film/ tv series were it turned out that greys are actually humans from the future - any one know what I'm talking about?

That really rings a bell, and for the life of me I can't remember the name of the show. Please refresh my memory! The book that the movie "Fire in the sky" was based on theorized that the greys were attempting to combine human and grey's DNA to create a new race, IIRC.

Anyone remember that show "space above and beyond"? It kinda stole some idea's from other shows but it was still great.

Seeing as we are on the subject of sci-fi shows, is anyone else here siked about the new Battlestar Galactica series coming out?

Already showing on SKY in the UK. Whilst I was initially alarmed the Starbuck is now a girl (if not a coffee franchise) it has turned out to suberb, intelligent viewing. Very highly recomended.

Got'em all! I'm a big Banks fan, but he's not "hard" SF. NS is pretty good though. Should some Lit. student of the future study it I'm sure our follies will rank with Ptolmaic astronomy!

I was able to catch Harlan Ellison on SCI FI channel rantinbg about the difference Between SCI FI and Science Fiction.
In That rant he made the observation, I cant remember the exact quote but the idea was that basicly,Hummans as a rule are not afraid of bieng invaded by Superior Intellegences from space, or conquered by machines The fear is that we won't be invaded and may have to clean up our own mess, and do our own thinking,
