STUTTGART, Germany (AP) -- German luxury sportscar maker Porsche will next year start selling cars in Pakistan, the company said in a statement Wednesday.
Starting in the first quarter of 2006, Porsche will open a showroom in Lahore, with an eye toward soon expanding into Islamabad and Karachi.

The company said it has signed contracts with Pakistani importer Autotechnik Pvt. Ltd.

Porsche has expended its international presence from 40 to some 90 countries over the past 10 years.

Should be, its a big country. Plus don't forget, every year, they have to buy the latest models.

Earlier this year I was surprised to see the SL 55 AMGs on the road there.

I have recently been told that there is quite the housing boom in Karachi and Islamabad. A pakistani friend of mine (he is probably responsible for driving a S-500 in Islamabad) tells me that peoples' land values have shot up and this has been a source of new found wealth for many, also many are taking money from the black market and converting it in the form of legal property buyouts.

What are the opinions of Pakistanis living there on the above?

I am reminded of a story of a farmer who lived on the outskirts of Islamabad and his land value went through the roof, he sold it and went to a dealership in Islamabad and bought himself a second hand C240.

Are most houses or property being bought through loans from banks and if so what is the typical interest rate offered and if not wha is the main source of financing?

Deler

Mumbai has a lot of nice cars, you are right, sometimes you wonder where these people get this kind of money, heck in Mumbai the apartment itself costs them half a million USD, forget the car, bloody expensive city to live.

Yeah, there are a lot of extremly nice cars in South Asia these days. I remember when iw as in Mumbai last summer, i saw 2 Porsche Carrera GTs and some Ferraris, Lamborghinis, high end Mercedes and even a few Aston Martins. It just shows how rich some people are, especially consdiering the fact taht cars on the subcontinents cost two to three times more than they do in America(that means those Carrera GTs cost more than 1 million USD...which enough to keep an entire rural vilalge in India or Pakistan well fed and extremly happy for many years).

Gas is so expensive in Pakistan, its in the 45+ rps/litre region now. I drive a 2.4 litre engine car in Dubai, I can't afford that in Pak.

What we need are more home-built cars. That can give us a lot of mileage and cheap to operate. CNG seems nice and cheap, but I hesitant ever since I've heard they can also blowup!

45Rs per L seems to be similar to around 1 US $ a litre, that is cheap in this new world, Dubai does not count, this price will go to at least 60rs soon.

we pay for 4.75Dh per gallon! When they raised it from 4 to 4.75, there was such an uproar.

1USD = 3.66
1gallon = 3.8 litres

I hope "soon" translates into at least a gap of 5 years?

Oil stands at 67 dollars a barrel now and the 100 dollar a barrel mark will apparently be reached in a year or so assuming no major problems with supply occurs, Any problem in Iraq, Venezuela or Iran or a combination of the 3 will cause this to happen sooner. Not only Pakistan but everyone will suffer mate.

With the number of oil rigs planning on starting to drill this year as well as the next, raising the b/d, I don't forsee the price reaching USD$100 per barrel in the next year. Maybe up toward USD$80.

A year ago, in October 2004, the prices skyrocketed to USD$57 dpb which was HUGE since the average for all of 2004 was slightly over USD$38 dpb.

Then again, I am not psychic....

That way we can help with the WoT by looking up several million arabs in kuwait and securing iraqs southern border, win-win-win.
