Maybe the Seminoles tribe should sue the NCAA for loss of revenue if FSU is forced to change mascots. Under the agreement that allows FSU to use a Nole, the tribe gets a percentage of revenue generated and schooling programs.
Will the NCAA step up to the plate and provide the same level of compensation? |

This reminds me of the time (around 1976) when some guy stopped at a fast food restaurant and proceeded to gripe about all of the local indian names for cities, parks, etc, and how he couldn't put up with Indian names on a daily basis. He then got back into his PONTIAC GTO and drove away.
The early american settlers were lonely, and horny people. Just pay attention to some of the names of plants and landmarks. Out west, we have a grass that grows in the cascades (origionally called "SQUAW T.I.T." grass). Later changed to T.I.T. grass. The PCers weren't finished yet. Then the name later changed to BARE grass (which was still too offensive). Now we have BEAR grass and few really know what to call it or even what it lookes like. There is a movement to remove/change all names of areas, streets, mountains, valleys, lakes, etc, if they contain the word "squaw" This is turning into a monumental head ache as this was a popular name. I am still wondering what will happen when the PCers find out what GRAND TETONS really means. Instead of "banning the mascots," the schools should have been given the choice to gain permission of the tribe in question, or to find another mascot. That way the tribes would be empowered to decide whether to have a school honor them (the tribe could be compensated and have control over how they are presented by the mascot) or the tribe could decide to slowly fade from "the white mans consciousness". Quick! Name a tribe that is not a name of a car or is a school mascot. I think the NCAA gave the tribes a slap in the face by not allowing them a voice, or a choice in the matter. Maybe that man in the GTO is now in the NCAA and just does not want to be reminded of the Native Americans that live here too. |

FSU allowed to keep Nole mascot
The NCAA has allowed FSU to keep the Nole mascot because the Florida Seminole Indian tribe gave the school permission. According to the Tallahasse Democrat yesterday

It rather is "Gran Turismo Omologato" where the Omologato part means the car satisfied the specs for participation in the Gran Turismo championship races. Anyway, why calling a team "Fighting Sioux" would be offensive really beats me. I mean, it seems more like showing honour and respect for the Sioux tribes. Same for the Fighting Illini. Their mascottes are not ridiculous at all... I don't know, seems to me like a further example of the stupidity of the entire PC concept. Last edited by thesaint : 08-25-2005 at 17:54 PM. |
