EU Parlaiment MPs humiliates Pakistan

Quote:

Strong protest lodged with EU

Diplomatic Correspondent

ISLAMABAD—Pakistan on Thursday strongly protested with the European Union, Belgium and Netherlands against the incident occurred on April 19, whereby members of European Parliament refused to met with the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Committee due to Inclusion of Maulana Sami ul Haq in the committee.
The Ambassador of the Belgium, European and Netherlands, which hold the current presidency of the EU, were individually summoned to the Foreign Office and a strong protest was lodged against the deplorable incident whereby the members of the European Parliament refused to met Maulana Sami-ul-Haq , who was part of the 8-members delegation of the Pakistan Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, currently visiting Europe.
Maulana Sami ul Haq was earlier stopped at the Brussels Airport by the Belgium authorities for an hour and half, and was later allowed to stay in Brussels for 24 hours after which the delegation was scheduled to leave for London.
Additional Secretary (Europe), Mr. Athar Mahmood, made a strong demarche to the three ambassadors against the action of the Belgian authorities and refusal of the members of the European Parliament to meet Maulana Sami ul Haq.
He told the ambassadors of the European Union, Belgium and Netherlands that the government of Pakistan has strong exception to the treatment meted out to Senator Maulana Sami ul Haq by the European Parliament.
He emphasized that the Government of Pakistan deeply regretted the European Parliament’s discriminatory behaviour towards senator Maulana Sami ul Haq. It was underlined that the media frenzy over Maulana’s visit and the resultant refusal by the European parliament to meet with senator were entirely uncalled for and totally unacceptable.
The Ambassadors of the above said countries agreed that the incidents was regrettable and stated that the EU would take serious note of the demarche of the government of Pakistan.

Another Modi type of situation!

The news does not mention that he was given this humilating treatment because he was a friend of the Taliban.

This is rather bad since the man was already in Brussels. If they didn't want him, then they should have told earlier.

This is just not done. Poor taste.

Somnath Chatterjee, the Indian Speaker refused to attend the Conference in Australia because he was told that he would be frisked!

Shaukat for tit-for-tat response to EU

From UMAR CHEEMA
ISLAMABAD - Pakistan will give a tit-for-tat response to the delegates of the EU by subjecting them to the treatment in the manner they treated the Pakistani delegation in Brussels, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Thursday affirmed here.
Addressing the treasury law-makers at a luncheon he hosted in their honour at PM House, Shaukat expressed his great anger over the humiliation, the members of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee were meted out by the EU officials.
“Whichever country will humiliate the Pakistani delegates, the government will reciprocate it in the same manner,” insiders quoted Shaukat as saying with specific reference to the European Union.
He said the government has registered its anguish over the humiliation at hands of Brussles immigration authorities and later when the EU authorities refused to hold a scheduled meeting with the members of delegation upon the inclusion of Senator Samiul Haq in the group.
Shaukat told members that the government has conveyed a strong-worded message to the EU envoy and said that it is a great insult of the Pakistani nation that their representatives have been subjected to humiliation.
Pakistani ambassador posted in Brussles, Shaukat said, has also conveyed the similar sort of the message to the relevant authorities and reiterated that EU delegates will meet the similar treatment when they visit Pakistan, it is learnt.
Maulana Samiul Haq who was part of the Pakistani delegation, was first detained at Brussels airport, declaring him the patron of Taliban. He was freed after the intervention of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
Later Neena Gill who heads the EU Assembly’s South Asia inter-parliamentary committee, refused to meet the Pakistani delegates objecting upon the inclusion of Senator Samiul Haq in the delegation.
Shaukat Aziz also briefed the treasury members about President Musharraf’s recent visit to India and rated it highly successful which will pave the way for the resolution of long-standing disputes between the nuclear rivals.
About the next NA session he said Assembly will resume its proceedings from May 2 and will continue till May 17 and President Musharraf will also address the joint sitting of both the Houses at that time.
He asked the NA Speaker and Chairman Senate to call off all the out-of-country visits of the parliamentarians during that time in order to ensure their presence on the occasion.

true it's poor taste, but a lesson well dealt to the government of Pakistan, such people do not represent us, and shouldn't be sent as envoys to represent us.

Ray,

I doubt any of that is ever going to happen. Just tough talk to assauage hurt domestic sentiments.

Under a scenario where Pakistan seems rather keen to have the EU visit and the EU OTOH fobbing of Pakistan owing to "security threat", most unlikely any thing is going to happen. See this story :

Quote:
The EC had imposed anti-dumping duty on exports of bedlinen during the last financial year and its investigative team also postponed its scheduled visit on account of security threat. Pakistani authorities say there is no solid ground to postpone the visit on security reasons as all the important dignitaries are constantly visiting the country and government provides them foolproof security.

I'm not a big fan of M Sami Haq, either. But this is old news, right? Read about this a week ago.

I think hes MMA. Modi and this dude, probably, rightly deserved it. Pakistan and India, have to face the embarassment because of these individuals, but they also should've known better.
