More than likely those were LAPD LAV-150 derivative armored security vehicles than tanks. Your average reporter thinks any armored vehicle is a tank and anything more than a hunting rifle is a machine gun. As far as the Kent State and Jackson State shootings go that was a result of an escalating standoff between rather undertrained National Guardsmen and radical demonstrators. There was no sanctioned order from the federal government to use lethal force. Also you'll not those incidents were only limited engagements with small, though still tragic, losses.
