That meant an average of 3 million Londoner's journeys into work per day were stuffed up by a mere 1000 people. That's clout and it member's (and admittedly non-members of said unions like myself) haven't done too badly out of it. The average train driver salary is £40k pa, signal operators £65-£70k pa etc and we're into the final year of a 3 year 5.1% deal of pay increases (national average is 2%).
Now I see the beauty of our car culture. Our mass transit workers can go on strike, but no one except for the very poor would miss them.

Work out of DC and say that.

Everyone in DC is poor?

I guess just by being near the heart of the federal government would suck all the cash out of your wallet.

No in answer to your question about being influenced by anybody, if you knew me then that would be the last thing you would say about me, at the time of Mad Maggies reign I was on a very low wage as a Security guard, and still voted for her, living in hope that things would get better, no I made my own mind up based on information gathered, and by the attitude of several managers I have encountered down the years, who all have the very same low opinion of the workforce, the worst place I ever worked was a family run DIY business in Liverpol city centre, who ruled it with a rod of iron, but thats another story,

And Gun, lets just agree to disagree

Purely anecdotal and doesn't reflect on the society as a whole but the best pay and conditions I've ever had was when I belonged to a union. I could not believe when some of my co-workers b:tched when union fees were due.

I mean drive into the damn city, public transportation into/out of the city (metro) is more convenient. Just drive to the metro stations and ride into the city. Lots of well paid people would be pissed off having to drive into the city five days a week, traffic is horrible and would be worse.

Keep a river between yourself and the city at night.
