He is also running more than one plant. Its a global operation. In addition to locations in the United States (Michigan, New York, Ohio and Indiana), AAM also has offices or facilities in Brazil, China, Germany, India, Japan,Luxembourg, Mexico, Poland, South Korea, Thailand and the United Kingdom(England and Scotland)

All he is asking is that the union accepts the same wage in his factories that they do in his competitors. Vice 3x higher than the going wage.

They have already signed union agreements with their workers in Mexico and the UK.

Crap, My lawyer only charges me $85.00 an hour. Maybe both of us should have got a job as a $70.00 an hour forklift operator at this plant.

Has the union waived the workers dues, since they are living on strike pay?

After a certain time on Workmans Comp disability, you do lay people off. In Fl its either 1 yr or when the WC Board says they can no longer do the job, or a job with your company. Why would you want to keep someone disabled, and not working on your rolls?
Thanks Top! You saved me some time here. Ditto!

Failure to heed warning-keyboard cleanup time! My apologies Gunny, I thought I heard you refer to yourself as a Topsarge earlier. Either way, at least you won't catch this Bucksarge calling you Sir. Oh btw, the last time I heard that was just after basic. Evidently at the time I lacked the proper amount of stripes to use that term. Nothing like some pushups to teach protocol.

I am a Union Rep and Health and Safety rep for one of the biggest Railway unions in the UK, being a member of the union does not include any sort of higher wage, in fact we are currently in dispute over a miserly 4.8 perecnt pay deal over two years with no increase in the second year, and industrial action is likely, so to UK subcrbers if you think the railwway is bad now, give it until the 12th May and if we don`t get what what we want then it will get a whole lot worse,

Have a nice day

What does the average worker in the UK get for a pay raise as a percentage?

Love the way you will stick it to the common man if you don't get what you want. Yea thats a reason for me to support Unions

A higher wage doesn't necessarily mean that you continue to get pay raises. It's relative to what the market would bear if there weren't any distortions (such as a cartel for labor, aka, a union). I won't pretend to be very knowledgeable on UK domestic economics, but one example that is easy to highlight is the coal strike under Thatcher. The fact that some coal mines needed to be shut down indicates that they weren't competitive in market place - I suspect that workers at these mines weren't getting pay raises, and yet, were paid too much since it required government subsidies to maintain their jobs.

Unfortunately many people have changed that to "the right to happiness."

No. my boss is a butthole from the word go. I have to put in way too many hours and I deserve to make lots more money. But to do that He would make me work even harder.

Wish I could just pack up and quit but he won't let me.

Guess stuff like that happens when you work for yourself

When did a a decent wage and standard of living become a right?
Must be that EU Constitution.

We have the right to have a chance at the big time. How well we use that chance determines our current position on the satisfaction scale. How we apply ourselves determines if we gain, lose or maintain position.

The only wage guarantee is that its guaranteed that the IRS will get their share before anyone else is allowed to dip into the pie.

Just to clarify a point in the 36 years I have been working, I have never before belong to any trades union of any description, however in the 4 years I have worked for the railways, I have become very disenchanted with Bosses?? and how they go about keeping the working man down at every opportunity, I too have a Ahole for a boss, and yes we do expect a decent wage to maintain our standard of living, especially at the incresing rate of prices for most things, thought that was pretty much standard for any trades union to uphold,
As for Magaret Thatcher yes I voted for her every time, but am only now learning what damage she did to this country by encouragoing the type of boss/business culture we have today, they don`t show any loyalty to the workforce, have an open door policy so long as you never want to walk through it and discuss anything, and seem to have only one reply if you raise a contentious issue, and that is, "You know where the door is"

So it really wasn't until you took a union job that you started having these troubles. Hummmm.

Ever think that either the union may be the root of the problems? or
maybe you are just in the wrong type of job?

What did you do prior to railroad work?

You learned that from your union friends I bet.

they don`t show any loyalty to the workforce,
What has the workforce done in the last 30 yrs to deserve loyalty from the Boss? The days of sticking with one job from end of your schooling until retirement are gone.
One of the "lessons" of the 80s was that you go where you can get a "Better Deal" so very few hold out for the long haul.

Now knowing that why should I pay for some specific training for you or set up learning programs when I know that once you achieve those skills, you will most likely go somewhere to use those skills that pays better? And they can pay better because they don't have the training cost. I'm training their workers for them. I see that all the time with a certain S&P 500 company in Panama City every day.

Since when did an "Open Door Policy" become the right of a worker? I saw this same attitude creeping into the military with a few Bn Commanders that had a "Open Door policy". If you have something positive to contribute. That will raise the work output of the company, then come tell me. Or better yet run it up to me THROUGH your supervisors. Thats one of the things they get paid for. Normally the ODP turns into "I'm gonna go whine to the boss". It distracts the bosses focus and accomplishes nothing.

I think I get the idea that things could get a little trying. I also work on the Railways and a particular trade union led by Mr Bob Crow has massive clout. Last September half of its 2000 members of the Metronet branch voted a for 72 hour strike on London Underground. That meant an average of 3 million Londoner's journeys into work per day were stuffed up by a mere 1000 people. That's clout and it member's (and admittedly non-members of said unions like myself) haven't done too badly out of it. The average train driver salary is £40k pa, signal operators £65-£70k pa etc and we're into the final year of a 3 year 5.1% deal of pay increases (national average is 2%).

Sounds pretty much like their modus operandi but one day boy will cry wolf too often.

It was the Tories in 1980s that first encouraged Britons to get rich off the backs of their fellow citizens. New Labour took it to a new level where the expectation is that you have a right to a life of riches without having to lift a finger.
