What about the regular troops who pass through or at least used to? Wiki states 330,000 in 2005 alone. That's a lucrative market for Guinness at Shannon.

Yes, I'm against them as well - in my view, letting the US military use Shannon as an outlet of war is no better than what the Swedes did in WW2 by letting German troops pass through.....aiding and abetting what we don't think is just.

The way I see it, Ireland has two options - full neutrality a la Switzerland, including EU withdrawl, or join NATO and consider operating under a united Western European Command, as we all know Ireland will stand with this bloc in a conflict anyway.

The current half-in half-out style that our current government is touting is simply not the way to go.

Did the Swedes have much choice in WW2? I don't think the US will bomb the place if Ireland refuses.

Yes and No - the Swedes could always have refused and faught any country which violated it's neutrality (admittedly with certain failure), but it didn't.

Same for us, our gov could easily have chosen to refuse, but didn't - something I'll never forgive Ahern for.

What do you expect from a tea-toting Irishman with the palette of a dog fish who considers rot gut to be the social masterpiece that frankly makes gasoline a better drink.
