That's just people. Starving Africans, squashed students, people killing people, so what?
The Dalai Lama though, he's their teddy bear.
China just spat on their teddy bear, their cute and cuddly little politically correct non-denominational/religion-when-your-not-having-a-religion spiritual advisor. They're not going to demand an invasion, but they are going to boycott the olympic sponsors, and they're going to sneer at anyone who even suggests going to there. If you don't think this sort of publicity is long lasting, talk to George Bush or more importantly the US's State Department ambassadors. GWB's legacy internationally is only just beginning.
If the Chinese Government think it's OK to piss off their main market twice in one year, that shows poor understanding of just how dependent they are on the western marketplace.

Colonel,

Very pragmatically observing, it is in the interest of the West that China breaks up, as the USSR crumbled, allowing the NATO and EU to drive deep into the Russian heartland.

Similarly, China has to break up and so should India! They are challenges in being!

Tibet and Xinjiang are not corrupted like the remainder of China by the concept and philosophy of Legalisation that makes the concept of oneness under central diktat feasible,

India, as an entity, will last a little longer since it is a democracy and more pliable to western diktats!

As I visualise, thanks to the bombardment of the sudden influx of PRC internet warriors, could there be more to the Olympic Fame and Protest than what meets the eye?

Your own explanation of the photos of the Chinese masquerading as Tibetan has germinated the doubt!!

Notwithstanding, the Dalai Lama still will remain the hero of Tibetans and nothing can change that.

The more the Chinese screws him, the greater shall he be!

I am a pragmatist!

A new generation of Westerners has been reminded that the Chinese have a nasty regime, and a whole new generation of Tibetans have learned that the best way for people to notice they suffer under a nasty regime is to be violent.

The fiction of a new China is gone.

Alrighty Then

S-2 and China- Born in Taiwan, delivered newspapers at 13 to my future political science professor- Dr. Hung-Mao Tien, who later became the Foreign Minister of Taiwan (blew my mind to find that out thirty years later), lived w/ a cantonese girl for 10 years. Budding sinologist when Lin Piao mattered. Nada since.

Soooo...Tibet. Knew it was an H.R. blot like Tien-An-Mien but couldn't POSSIBLY imagine what this has become. It really wasn't at all on my radar like Iraq and Afghanistan. The story has penetrated into my consciousness, though. That means damn near everybody else's too because, honestly, I didn't care.

Guys, I'm stunned by this developing story and Parihaka's correct about M21's soccer moms. Do you think MacDonald's wants to partner with the Chinese Olympic Committee to offer free olympic cups w/ every happy meal if "soccer mom" ain't bringin' the kiddies by- FOR JUST THAT REASON.

There are massive lessons for everybody here about the levels, effect, and impact of global economic integration.

Hey Brigadier,

He was a she and said, "HEY BABE...TAKE A WALK ON THE WILLLLD SIDE".. Did his/her little boy walk up talking about his precious Tibet? Gotta admit, at first I thought that this-

"great news, today our chinese goverment have told all the world ,that dalai lama is a 100% terrorist"

had been reported by Chevy Chase on SNL news w/Jane Curtain (Jane! You slut!!! ). Really tasty satire by nonameitis...

Alas, I was wrong. He/she meant it. Sincerely. Maybe there's validity to keeping the firewalls up. Should these guys learn the real story too fast, implosion is likely.

THAT won't be pretty.

Who the hell listens? Really how many people are going to say in the west "you know the CCP just called the DL a 100 percent terrorist" and will someone do anything else other than roll their eyes.

Outside of the let them eat cake free marketers (who know China is evil as sin and just pretend that trade has cleaned them up so they can sleep at night) who the hell doesn't know the Chinese government is violent and oppresses more people than any country in the world.

Who the hell finds the Chinese government honest outside of Pakistan, Iran, North Korea, Burma, Zimbabwe and the ****ing Sudan.

And the worst goddamn part, is that you live in a such a damn fanstasy world that you probably expect us all to say "oh **** the CCP has made a decree; and they never lie".

Colonel,

Just as soon as one of those baby seals stands up, extends his arm, and yells "STOP!!! just before that lumberjack swings the ol' axe- ALL FOR THE CAMERA, BTW, y'all will be in for a world of hurt.

See- NBC won't show baby seals being bludgeoned every night on the news to "soccer mom". But, if just ONE of them baby seals stand up to that slaughter, it'll be all over for Canada.

"Soccer Mom" will rally around that baby seal. They'll take it into hiding to avoid the Canadian Gestapo man-hunt. They'll smuggle him to Paris and form a gov't-in-exile. Easier for baby seal and soccer mom to shop/sight-see. Nice place- Paris, if you can afford it.

All it takes is one baby seal doing the brave thing.

Bill Clinton lifted the embargo against China, so I am thinking if his wife gets elected the US will forget just as fast again.
