Internal vs External Problems

This is a sort of continuation of my discussion with Recon sgt from the Leclerc thread in the Land Forces forum. The basic topic was whether internal problems are more dangerous to a society/civilization/nation then external ones.

Swift Sword sprung a term on me the other day in the Iraq War forum, maybe others are familiar with it: Neo-Wilsonian theory. From what I gather, it posits that domestic and foreign policy are, or at least can be, directly connected.
